***TRIGGER WARNING - this episode contains talk about Suicide and self harm. Please use your discretion while listening. Resources: The Trevor Project: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ Connect with Lisa: http://www.lisasugarman.com/ Lisa Sugarman (she/her) is a Boston-based author, columnist, crisis counselor with The Trevor Project, storyteller with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), survivor of suicide loss, and a mental health advocate. Her mission is to help end the stigma surrounding suicide & mental illness by normalizing conversations about MENTAL HEALTH, SUICIDE, LOSS, and GRIEF. After learning that her father Jim took his own life (35 years after he died), she had to re-grieve his death for the second time in my life. She also needed to process this new kind of loss and come to terms with the fact that he was mentally ill and suffering in silence. Sadly, since her dad was struggling at a time when talking about mental illness was taboo, he couldn't be saved. But others can. That's why she's turned her pain into purpose by working as a crisis counselor with The Trevor Project and as a mental health advocate. Now, her purpose is to share content and spark conversations to help end the stigma of suicide. One. Story. At. A. Time. She wholeheartedly believes there's strength and healing to be found within our shared experiences, that's why she's committed to sharing her story of life after loss.

Welcome to Without Regret, the podcast where we dive deep into the untold stories of survival and transformation. I'm your host, Tamara and today's episode is one of my favorites. I was excited to talk to Edward because his story is so different from what we usually talk about. He had to overcome an aggressive cancer that a lot of people don't survive through. He outlines his journey, the good the bad and the ugly and the funny, in his book titled "Cancer, Musical Theatre & Other Chronic Illnesses", which has been re-released to celebrate 10-years cancer free. I was also excited because he's kind of a big deal on TikTok Edward gets real and raw in his story of survival and what it is REALLY like to have cancer, get treatment and ultimately recover - all with an incredible sense of humor. We also go down a social media shaming rabbit hole at the end, but it is a great debate wort sticking around for!
Today, we have a tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat. My guest, Fresh from crafting his first book "The Summer I Died Twenty Times," is here to share his personal journey that defies the odds. Did you know that 450,000 Americans and Canadians succumb to medical errors each year? In this episode my guest will unveil his own narrative of narrowly escaping becoming a statistic in that staggering figure. Brace yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions as he recounts 11 heart procedures in 11 years, numerous encounters with clinical death, concussions, PTSD, post-concussion syndrome, brain trauma, defective pacemakers, and surgeries gone awry. But it doesn't stop there. Add multiple instances of cognitive medical bias and misdiagnoses to the mix – they certainly tried to put him on the permanently dead list. In a nutshell, his upcoming book, "The Summer I Died Twenty Times," is a personal medical drama spanning from 2009 to 2018. The sequel, a work in progress, delves into the period from 2019 to the present. It's a gripping account of Fred's journey through deaths, brain trauma, recovery attempts, persistent medical errors, botched surgeries, cognitive biases, defective pacemakers, and the unwavering spirit of resilience. Join us as we navigate the tumultuous waters, questioning faith, and discovering the potent medicinal tool of Intermittent Fasting. It's not just about resilience; it's about refusing to let the adversities define Fred's life. This is "Without Regret," where we unravel stories that inspire you to face challenges head-on, and emerge stronger than ever. Resources: https://www.instagram.com/p/CWWoCIRF794

***TRIGGER WARNING - this episode contains conversations about sexual violence and abuse. Welcome to Without Regret, the podcast where stories of resilience and redemption take center stage. and in each episode, we delve into the lives of individuals who have faced adversity head-on and emerged stronger on the other side. Today, we're honored to share the remarkable journey of Michelle Shekhinah, a survivor whose life took an unexpected turn in 2014. What began as a fairy tale marriage soon turned into a nightmare of abuse and exploitation. But in the face of unimaginable darkness, Michelle found the courage to break free and reclaim her life. Join us as we explore her path from despair to empowerment, from victim to advocate. Through her resilience, she not only saved herself but has also become a beacon of hope for others who have experienced trauma and abuse. Get ready to be inspired, moved, and uplifted in Part 1 of Michelle's story. At the end of this episode, there are a couple of messages I want to leave you with. The first is that what Michelle has experienced IS Trafficking. This is not normal behavior and if you are in a similar situation, you are not alone, you are not crazy, and there is help out there. The second is to believe the survivors when they tell their stories. It can be easy to hear all of this chaos and think "Oh this is just a jilted wife looking for revenge". That is not the case. Michelle is in hiding, she isn't naming any names or even her location. She has nothing to gain by talking about this other than helping other women who are being abused. I don't want to wait until the end of part 2 to talk about her foundation From the Floor to the door, which will be explained in more detail in part 2, but you can visit her website www.fromthefloortothedoor.com for help. Stay tuned for part 2 in the coming days.
