Description

Coastal and island countries in Southern Africa are particularly vulnerable to the impacts ofclimate change. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) can help enhance climate resilience forcoastal communities in the region. However, several challenges inhibit the uptake of EbA.This podcast series discusses these challenges as well as the opportunities that marine andcoastal EbA poses for countries within the Southern African Development Community(SADC).This podcast series is hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), funded by the European Union under the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Programme (GCCA+), overseen by the SADC Secretariat. It forms part of a project that aims to strengthen the uptake of marine and coastal EbA in the national climate responses of SADC’s coastal states.

EbA is the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of an overall climate adaptation strategy to help people adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. In this episode Hannah Sack discusses how this project is contributing toward upscaling EbA in SADC. She discusses her research paper, which provides a stock-take of marine and coastal EbA within SADC and explains how a regional community of practice for EbA can help accelerate climate resilient development in the region. This podcast series is hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), funded by the European Union under the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Programme (GCCA+), overseen by the SADC Secretariat. Financing for EbA remains one of the most pressing challenges for countries trying to pursue climate action. In this episode Angelique Pouponneau discusses her research paper which identifies sources of funding for EbA, the barriers to accessing this funding and highlights the Seychelles innovative financing model for marine conservation through its famous Debt-for-Nature Swap. This podcast series is hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), funded by the European Union under the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Programme (GCCA+), overseen by the SADC Secretariat. There has recently been progress in strengthening marine and coastal EbA in climate policy in Africa, along with a surge in ocean research globally. However, rising concerns over terrestrial issues in climate policy have overshadowed marine and coastal EbA concerns. In this episode Dr. Jessica Thorn discusses her research paper which identifies the challenges and opportunities for integrating marine and coastal EbA into climate policy and planning within SADC.This podcast series is hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), funded by the European Union under the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Programme (GCCA+), overseen by the SADC Secretariat. Current regulatory frameworks in many SADC countries are insufficient to ensure community involvement. In the absence of government action, communities adapt autonomously, sometimes in an uncoordinated manner. In this episode Dr. Celia Macamo, discusses her research paper which identifies the need to include communities in EbA policy, planning and governance in coastal zones of SADC.This podcast series is hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), funded by the European Union under the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Programme (GCCA+), overseen by the SADC Secretariat. The health and abundance of coastal ecosystems underpins livelihoods for many coastal communities in SADC. In addition, low levels of socio-economic development, combined with limited livelihood opportunities, drive vulnerability among coastal communities in the region. In this episode Penelope Price, discusses her research paper, which explains how marine and coastal EbA can help to upscale jobs and livelihoods of vulnerable communities in the region. This podcast series is hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), funded by the European Union under the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Programme (GCCA+), overseen by the SADC Secretariat.
