season two of the ethics4medics podcast comes to a close with possibly the most controversial topic within modern healthcare: assisted suicide. Christoffer and ezio again get help from JY & Maria, drawing a distinction between not only euthanasia and assisted suicide but also between the latter and so-called assisted dying; but also discuss: how can society be liberal about suicide without also legalizing assisted suicide? And finally what debates around assisted suicide tell us about the very point of medicine.
Christoffer and ezio definitely need more mics, especially when dealing with a topic as intimidating as the ethics and philosophy of suicide… so for this episode they get help from regular guests JY Lee and M Marti-Castaner; the result is messy, like life itself.
Christoffer and ezio bring Olivia back to talk about the ethics of abortion, with particular attention for the recent proposal to extend the “no question asked” period from 12 to 18 weeks in Denmark. If you are curious about the work of Laura Heinsen, which Olivia mentions a few times on the show, check it out here: https://anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/maq.12717
today Christoffer and ezio have a US anthropologist on the show, Olivia Spalletta, to talk about the ethics and politics of disability at the beginning of life - and the difference between reciprocity and solidarity in scandi healthcare; but also prioritarianism vs egalitarianism vs utilitarianism (and even, wait for it, biopower).
For the first time in the long history of this podcast, Christoffer and ezio have a guest: Maria Marti-Castaner, a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor in Public Mental Health at the University of Copenhagen, who joins them to discuss postpartum depression and whether meds can take down oppressive structures. The FDA has recently approved the first oral treatment indicated to treat postpartum depression. What’s new about this medication? It seems to be faster-acting. In two clinical trials, women with severe depression experienced improved symptoms 15 days after taking the pill. Still, the long-term effects are unknown as well as its efficacy in mothers with moderate symptoms. While these are good news for women with severe postpartum depression, they also raise questions: when are we going to start addressing the social determinants of postpartum depression? Are pills moving us away from changing the structures that contribute to women’s suffering? Or can pills be liberating?
Christoffer & ezio have a guest, again: JY Lee is here to talk about the ethics of reproductive technologies, with special focus on uterus transplants, which allow women to experience pregnancy. But is that only going to replicate patriarchy? Yes, the barbie movie gets a mention too ;)
In the second episode of this second season of the Ethics4Medics podcast, Christoffer and ezio discuss equality and responsibility within healthcare, and tough priorities in clinical decision-making. What are we going to do with non-compliant patients - and what about cross-fitters?
Christoffer and ezio are back, and in the first episode of this second season of the ethics4medics podcast, they discuss vasectomies and the ethical, medical and political considerations in favour - and against - men getting a vasectomy.
Christoffer & ezio discuss the classic dichotomy in moral theory between kantian and consequentialist approaches - and why medics should care
Season finale for Ethics4Medics’ 1st season; and what else could Christoffer & ezio discuss, if not the new danish dynamite, wegovy - and what it says about our society’s obsession with fat?
Christoffer & ezio tackle THE BIG one, distinguishing ontology and epistemology; and then they apply the distinction to a complex condition, depression - and also to Christoffer’s favourite: sarcopenia. And as if that werent enough, the audio isn’t great either… enjoy!
Christoffer & ezio discuss the tripartite distinction between permissible, impermissible and obligatory and how it might help deal with some cases from Christoffer’s time in the ER
Christoffer and ezio were meant to discuss the difference between explanation and justification, but since episode four was the first recording after the pilot went live, they mostly ended up reacting to listeners’ comments (keep them coming!)
Christoffer and ezio tackle a big one: the difference between law and ethics and how it matters to healthcare professionals
Christoffer and ezio are back after a succesful pilot, and episode 2 is about truth and evidence, with a lot of focus on false negatives and false positives
Here comes the pilot episode of Ethics4Medics, a new podcast series by Christoffer Bjerre Haase and Ezio Di Nucci about medical ethics, today’s topic is paternalism
Christoffer and ezio are joined by DR's doctor Peter Qvortrup Geisling to discuss free will and responsibility in the context of healthcare and medical education... and yes, it's på dansk igen igen, so pls bear with one of us...
today Christoffer is on his own, talking (på dansk, igen) to Ebbe Preisler about assisted suicide. that way you are spared ezio's accent, but this episode is not exactly 'easy listening' either. if you want to read more about Ebbe's story, you can start here: Ebbe Preisler taler ud om drabet på sin kone - TV 2
Christoffer and ezio are back for Season 3, and this time - wait for it - på dansk! so tune in if you are curious to hear the worst DK accent in the history of podcasting... you will also find out about Ida Donkin, her clinical work consisting of 17h shifts but also her political engagement and finally the question: what kinds of medical doctors do we want, in the 21st century?
