Whitey: The Rise and Rule of the Shoprite King by Niel Joubert, published by Tafelberg, was launched at Exclusive Books V&A. Neil was in conversation with Whitey Basson. This is a recording of that discussion. Order your copy of Whitey: The Rise and Rule of the Shoprite King (also available in Afrikaans as Whitey: Sakereus van Shoprite) from your nearest bookshop or online. In 1979, he bought eight small shops in and around Cape Town. Over the years, Whitey quietly built his Shoprite group, acquiring Grand Bazaars and the struggling Checkers. In a famous takeover deal, he bought OK Bazaars from SA Breweries for a single Rand. It became profitable within a year, and Whitey was widely hailed as a business genius. In this authorised biography, access to the Bassons’ archives and interviews with Whitey and his inner circle, financial journalist Niel Joubert recreates Whitey’s story in rich detail: from his childhood on a Porterville farm to his mentorship at Pep Stores (under the renowned Renier van Rooyen), achieving his lifelong target of eclipsing Pick n Pay, and conquering Africa. Today, Shoprite is the biggest retailer on the continent, one of the 100 biggest in the world and South Africa’s largest private employer. A colourful, inspirational story. Whitey: The Rise and Rule of the Shoprite King is available in Afrikaans and English.
The Dao of Daniel by Lodewyk G du Plessis, translated by Michiel Heyns, was launched at Exclusive Books V&A in Cape Town. The author was in conversation with Tan Twan Eng. This is a recording of that discussion. About the book: Daan van der Walt, a Latin-quoting, God-fearing former Kalahari farmer, visits his estranged son in China for the first time. When he has a vertigo attack soon after his arrival, his son drops him off at a Buddhist monastery. Under the guidance of Master Yang, an obstreperous Daan is made to practise Tai Chi to recover his balance, both physically and spiritually. He soon finds himself on a difficult path (the Dao of the title) to come to terms with his feelings of remorse and guilt. He sets out to write his Historia, or confessions, in the form of letters to his deceased wife and imaginary observations to his beloved dog. An unusual, often very funny, novel whose fields of reference include Roman and Greek mythology, Christian theology, Chinese history and Daoism. The Dao of Daniel is available at all good bookstores and online. Visit our website for more information: https://www.nb.co.za/en/view-book/?id=9780624092537

Venter, the oldest war correspondent still active today, bore witness to some of humanity’s biggest atrocities over the past 55 years – and has lived to tell the tale. In the 1960s, with little money, a sense of adventure and a healthy dollop of chutzpah, Venter set out overland from Cape Town to London, braving dodgy roads and hostile territory in a newly post-colonial Africa. And so an iconic war journalist was born. Since then, Venter has reported from 25 conflict zones, from the civil wars in Mozambique and Nigeria and the Israel-Hezbollah War in Lebanon to the wars in the Congo.
Cleaner's Boy: A resistance road to a liberated life by Patric TariqMellet, published by Tafelberg, was launched at The Book Lounge in Cape Town. Patric was in conversation with radio veteran Clarence Ford. This is a recording of that conversation. Order your copy of Cleaner’s Boy from leading book stores or online. More details on our website: https://www.nb.co.za/en/view-book/?id=9780624093657 About this book: In 1997 I became Patric William Tariq Mellet at the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen. For 41 years I’d been known by neither of my parents’ surnames, but as ‘De Goede’. I’d gone through momentous times with this persona, and suddenly ‘De Goede’ was no more — ‘De Goede’ was dead. All that remained as a reminder was a nickname, ‘Zinto’, given to me by comrades who’d humorously interpreted ‘De Goede’ as ‘things’ — ‘zinto’ in isiXhosa. This book tells the story of both personas, and of the road I took as I navigated my way through the grey world of the ‘halfnaatjie’ . . . I was born into a whirlwind of turbulence which, over time, I learnt never would pass. Questions of identity were unavoidable in Patric Tariq Mellet’s life. As a small child he watched as his immediate family were mistreated, arbitrarily classified and separated through apartheid laws. He endured a turbulent childhood, shuttled between foster families responding to his mom’s plea for ‘a home for a well-behaved Catholic boy’ and surviving Dickensian conditions in the ‘Huis’, a hellish children’s asylum in Vredehoek. Despite deception about his birth father, Patric found a path towards his roots and a sense of self, which sparked the fire of resistance in the young Cleaner’s Boy – a term of endearment that referred to his mother. Patric Mellet’s autobiography demonstrates a spirit of unbridled defiance. In small and major ways, he liberated himself from an unpromising and tragic early life to a life of undoubtable impact and influence. A freedom fighter, a mystic and always a firebrand.
Tafelberg author Jan Glazewski recently addressed the Cape Town Press Club, sharing more about his recently released memoir, Blood and Silver: A true story of survival and a son's search for his family treasure. He was in conversation with Twanji Kalula. About this book: "On the border of the forest, among the trees, you must look for our silver and my hunting guns." Before fleeing the family estate near Lviv, in what is now Ukraine, Jan Glazewski’s father buried what he could salvage of the family silver in the forest. The Glazewskis left war-ravaged Europe after World War II for a new life in South Africa. When Jan is born in Paarl in 1953, he nearly dies, like his elder brother before him, of severe haemophilia. Against the odds, he survives childhood – only to discover, at the start of his career, that he is HIV-positive from receiving contaminated blood products. Despite this setback, Jan goes on to have a remarkable legal and academic career, which includes his involvement in drafting the environmental clause in the new South African Constitution. It is only after retirement that Jan finally has the opportunity to indulge his lifelong obsession: to recover the family silver. He travels to Ukraine where, armed only with a hand-drawn map and enlisting the help of a Polish writer, a Ukrainian metal-detector operator and his shady sidekick, he sets out on what seems like a mad quest. Many misadventures ensue. The colourful life story of an exceptional man, Blood and Silver is a riveting tale of adventure and resolve, told with insight and elegance.
