Young argues that the classical Greek world in which rhetoric originated as a discipline was one of curious ambivalences regarding the power of beauty; it was a power of the weak which could be stronger than strength and yet the possessor of beauty rarely wields that power but is instead possessed by it. In the midst of the sophistic ascendancy of the 5th and 4th century B.C.E. rhetoric is developed and offered as an attempt to give individuals agency over beauty's potency.
