Jason Porterfield has dedicated his life to the cause of peace.  After giving up his comfortable suburban lifestyle at an early age to move into some of the darkest slums of the inner city he experienced first hand the most challenging living conditions in the poorest communities.   From Camden New Jersey, to Vancouver Canada's Downtown Eastside and then to Indonesia he lived and shared life  with the most desperate,  homeless, and drug addicted communities.  As a part of his experience, you'll hear the powerful story of the gruesome serial killer Robert Pickton  and how that story  impacted Jason personally and the community where he lived. In this episode you'll learn how Jason's mission  (Through Servants) was one of love and friendship within a population that was not necessarily starving for food, but for companionship.  Community dinners and sharing life through homelessness,  "pre-Hab" and "re-Hab"   became the open door for trust and conversation that would ultimately lead to questions and interest in this man named Jesus.    Porterfield's amazing book "Fight Like Jesus:  How Jesus Waged Peace Throughout Holy Week" focuses on the teachings of the ultimate peacemaker, Jesus Christ, who called on us to not only love our neighbor but to love our enemies as well.  Nothing exemplified that message more  than the amazing events of Holy Week described in Jason's  book like you've probably  never heard it before.  Jason Porterfield tracks each day of that week and focuses on how Jesus used the week of his crucifixion to share his vision of peace in very powerful ways. You'll love this book!!

I say this a lot.  But... I'll say it again.  This is one of my favorite conversations.   Meet  legendary major league baseball player, Doug Flynn.   He was team mates with Pete Rose, Johnny Bench,  Ken Griffey and the rest of the Great 8 from the Cincinnati Reds world series winning 1975 and 76 team .  He'll share the excitement of those years, the trauma of baseball trades, the power of a 40 year marriage and the challenges of cancer.  Doug shares the heart breaking story of his sister's disappearance,  his life changing Christian journey with "Professional Athletes Outreach" and how he went from an upbringing in the Baptist church to an awesome relationship with Jesus.   As he says, you can only trick people into believing you're a Christian for so long.  Then it becomes real.  This episode is overflowing with joy, and laughter along with life long lessons learned.  Thanks to my good friend George Toles for the introduction....and to Doug for promising to make even more Amazing Great connections! They don’t really teach parenting skills in school.   I guess we’re expected to just figure it out through trial and error.  That’s a pretty flawed way, when human lives are in our hands.  Unconditional love for our kids is a great start and a perfect foundation for good parenting, but it’s  not exactly a strategy.  My guest on this episode Jonathan Catherman, has made it his life’s mission to build a toolset for parents to use in raising well prepared kids at every age.  He’ll share some of his awesome insights here.  Plus, he’ll share his optimistic outlook on the current emerging generation, and why he things it will be the next GREAT GENERATION.  Jonathan also shares some great ideas on how parents can help their kids connect with Jesus and build their own relationship with him and not just adopt their parents faith.  This weeks episode is loaded with practical information about successful parenting.  Here are the additional links to connect with Jonathan and his great work. If you talk to any of the current list of awesome Christian Music Performers, somewhere in the conversation,  John Michael Talbot's name will come up.  In this awesome conversation between Amazing Greats guest host Joe Micheals and John he reveals how his young marriage fell apart as he became a Bible thumping legalistic Christian fanatic.  Then hear how he flipped from an "anti-Catholic" to actually becoming a Franciscan monk who ultimately married a Catholic Nun and lives happily today in a monastic marriage.  You can't make this stuff up!  This man's story is truly amazing. John Michael Talbot's music, too, took some major flips over the years, as he transitioned from  Christian folk rock to a unique sound that was all his own.  Music that his record company said would never sell became massively successful. This episode just oozes with wisdom from one of the most successful players and coaches in football.  You'll hear how the game of football is just a small part of the impact Sherman Smith has on players.   From High school to the NFL his unique slant on what it takes to be  successful is what makes his story so compelling.  As a follower of Jesus he strives to walk the walk and let his actions speak.  As he says. "It's not what I do, or say,  IT'S WHO I AM, that matters most.  You'll hear about the power of the team's  FRIDAY MORNING DEVOTIONALS,   why some players were depressed even shortly after a Super Bowl win, and the incredible miracle story that he shares in the Kendrick Brothers film:  "SHOW ME THE FATHER".   Episode 28 is one of my very favorites as I got to know Sherman TANK.  For the movie Trailer:  https://youtu.be/Ao9IxgtRXyETo stream the movie on Amazon Prime for $5.99:  https://www.amazon.com/Show-Me-Father-Sherman-Smith/dp/B09HH6G6WN/ref=tmm_aiv_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Max Mclean may well be the foremost authority on one of the greatest authors and intellectuals of the past century, C.S. Lewis.  After all, Mclean has spent a big part of his life capturing the essence of  Lewis through stage presentations and now in film.  Max Mclean is the founder and executive director of the Fellowship for the Performing Arts in New York who specialize in artistic performances through a Christian world view. Mclean is the star of the movie, " The Most reluctant convert.  The Untold Story of C. S. Lewis", now available for the first time through stream or DVD.   Whether you are a fan of C.S. Lewis's many works (Chronicles of Narnia and dozens more) or not, this powerful biopic will  reveal the life and genius of one of the worlds great thinkers.  You'll be captivated by his conversion from atheist to theist and ultimately  to one of Christianity's  most vocal apologist.   The theatrical debut of the movie was met with such a large audience that it remained in theaters well beyond its original run. Now, "The Most Reluctant Convert" is available on line at https://cslewismovie.com/.    This movie is likely to become the defining masterpiece that memorializes the amazing life of C.S. Lewis.  In addition to his incredible solo performances on stage and now in film, Max Mclean also makes the word of God come to life as the voice of the "Listener's Bible" (NIV).PS   If you are new to C.S. Lewis I encourage you to read his book' "Mere Christianity".  It is not a light read and you may need to spend some time with it,  but it is truly a work of art.
