In this solo episode of The Understaffed, Melissa encourages businesses to consider remote staffing a permanent change that can save money and increase productivity. Many employees desire remote work, but cultural considerations may be a hurdle for some companies. Research shows that productivity can increase with remote work due to fewer distractions and more comfortable working environments. Leaders may feel more in control when they see their employees, but this may translate to something other than better management or understanding of employee performance. Melissa discusses the benefits of remote work for veterinary, optical, and dental practices. She suggests using video conferencing, team messaging, and project management tools and hiring a dedicated remote employee to handle specific tasks like answering phones and checking emails while allowing in-house staff to focus on client care. Melissa emphasizes the cost savings and increased productivity that come with remote work but acknowledges that it ultimately comes down to the culture of each practice. Melissa encourages listeners to rethink remote work possibilities and reach out with any questions or concerns. Melissa conciergeelite.com had a great discussion with Michael King on his show The Level Up Leader podcast https://levelupleader.teams.coach they shared insights on investing in people and how it is essential for a successful businesses. How it encourages leaders to take the time to learn what drives their employees and makes them happy to get the best results. They also talked about how fear can be a significant hurdle when investing in people, but overcoming insecurity can help break through this barrier. Finally, she discussed how COVID-19 caused an increase in demand for medical services, prompting her to create Concierge Elite to provide better care for patients remotely. Melissa B. founded ConciergeElite, a remote service providing dedicated front desk staff for veterinary and medical practices. It was in response to the need for help during COVID-19 when businesses had to send their staff home. She started with just three people and now has hundreds of practices working with them. For those interested, there is offering $200 off services if they mention this podcast. The biggest takeaway from her experience is that fear can be the greatest enemy of progress - investing in people creates a margin without hidden costs. It should be embraced rather than avoided by leaders.

Melissa from conciergeelite.com made a guest appearance on the Frontline Podcast from legion.co Melissa talks about the biggest challenges in staffing today: businesses needing to rethink how they hire and employees wanting different jobs or benefits than they've always had. The generational differences and changes when we think about this podcast and who we're really keeping at the center of our thought process. And our concern, we're talking about Frontline employees. The reality is, I needed to think about how the differences in what people want generationally still apply even to those in retail or hospitality...or in any other industry for that matter! Absolutely those are the frontline workers,...the people who made it,... removed it, and still were working in the restaurant industry,...retail,...factory workers,...truck drivers,...all of those. They discuss the generational difference in how people approach work and leadership. She points out that older generations tend to think of themselves as successful in their current ways, while younger generations are more likely to be open to change and willing to try new things.  This podcast provides examples of how leaders can successfully adapt their practices to meet the needs of their employees. Jon and Melissa discuss that businesses can offer employees what they want while meeting business needs. They also talked about how generational concepts like many retired veterans, retirees in general, and high schoolers looking for work affect businesses' willingness to hire these individuals. Jon mentioned that it is scary for people to think they might not be productive when working from home, but surveys have shown that they are more effective. He then discussed how leaders should focus on improving themselves or managing others. Melissa talked about how humans and AI can work together to make hiring processes more efficient. She cautioned that we need to find a middle ground between the two schools of thought, where AI is used but with human oversight to ensure bias is not introduced. She also mentioned some tools and resources businesses can use to improve their hiring process.
