As you can tell from the column’s name,

we’ll explore it thoroughly,

那么我们第一个词就是：“幸福”。

nà me | wǒ men | dì yī gè | cí | jiù shì | ：“xìng fú”

So our first word is: "xìng fú" (happiness).

“幸”指的是幸运，

“xìng” | zhǐ de shì | xìng yùn

"Xìng" means lucky,

“福”指的是一种美好。

“fú” | zhǐ de shì | yī zhǒng | měi hǎo

and "fú" refers to something like a wonderful life.

英文里好像没有准确对应的单词，

yīng wén | lǐ | hǎo xiàng | méi yǒu | zhǔn què | duì yìng | de | dān cí

There doesn’t seem to be an exact equivalent word in English—

happy只是快乐，

happy | zhǐ shì | kuài lè

"Happy" only means happy, joyful,

但幸福不只是快乐。

dàn | xìng fú | bù zhǐ shì | kuài lè

but 幸福 is more than just joy.

我试着用一些词来组成“幸福”，

wǒ | shì zhe | yòng | yī xiē | cí | lái | zǔ chéng | “xìng fú”

I’ll try to define "幸福" with some words:

平静，被爱，快乐，满足。

píng jìng | bèi ài | kuài lè | mǎn zú

calmness, being loved, joy, and contentment.

当我们得到一个想要的东西，

dāng | wǒ men | dé dào | yī gè | xiǎng yào | de | dōng xī

When we get something we want,

我们觉得很幸福。

wǒ men | jué de | hěn | xìng fú

we feel 幸福.

当我老公回家吃到热热的晚饭，

dāng | wǒ | lǎo gōng | huí jiā | chī dào | rè rè | de | wǎn fàn

When my husband comes home and eats a warm dinner,

他觉得很幸福。

tā | jué de | hěn | xìng fú

he feels 幸福.

孩子生活在一个美好的家庭，

hái zi | shēng huó | zài | yī gè | měi hǎo | de | jiā tíng

When a child grows up in a loving family,

孩子觉得很幸福。

hái zi | jué de | hěn | xìng fú

the child feels 幸福.

能做自己喜欢的工作，

néng | zuò | zì jǐ | xǐ huān | de | gōng zuò

Being able to do work you love—

isn’t that a form of 幸福?

有一些人放弃了大城市的忙碌工作，

Some people give up their busy jobs in big cities

回到农村过平静而幸福的生活。

huí dào | nóng cūn | guò | píng jìng | ér | xìng fú | de | shēng huó

and return to the countryside to live a peaceful and happy life.

最后，我们来看几个难一点的句子。

zuì hòu | wǒ men | lái | kàn | jǐ gè | nán | yī diǎn | de | jù zi

Finally, let’s look at a few more complex sentences.

幸福不是喧嚣尘世的浮光掠影，

xìng fú | bù shì | xuān xiāo | chén shì | de | fú guāng lüè yǐng

幸福 is not the fleeting glow of the noisy mortal world,

而是内心深处的岁月静好。
