כאשר שיהודי מסתכל מסביבו ורואה "ארץ" ש"אוכלת יושבי'" ויש בה "אנשי מדות" [כמ"ש בשני דפ' שלח] ‏–‏ הוא נמצא ב"ארץ" שבה ה"דולר" וה"תכלית" ד"זה פרי'" זהו העיקר, והיא "אוכלת" את אלו שצריכים לעשות מה"ארץ" שתהי' "ארץ נושבת" וכו', ובמילא טוען הוא איך יכול להתמודד עם כל זה? מוטב לו להסתגר בד' אמות של תורה וכו' ולא להתעסק עם "ארץ" כזו! או שטוען מאיפה יש לו את הכח לא להתפעל מכ"ז, ולהמשיך ללמוד תורה ולקיים מצוות ולחנך את בניו ובנותיו שלא יתחשבו עם "מנהג המדינה" זה? ‏–‏ באה ההוראה מסיפור שילוח המרגלים, שהכוונה היא כן ללכת ל"ארץ כנען" ולעשות ממנה "ארץ ישראל", ו"הקב"ה עוזרו", ויש בו את ה"יהושע וכלב" שע"י רואה ש"טובה הארץ מאד מאד".

משיחת מוצאי ש"פ שלח, מבה"ח תמוז ה'תשל"ט

When a Jew looks around, he sees a “land” that “consumes its inhabitants” and contains “men of measure” [as it says in Sheini of Parashas Shelach]. Meaning, he finds himself in a “land” where everything is about earning money and “its fruit,” and the land thus “consumes” the person, who is supposed to transform it into an “inhabited land” etc. So he might argue, why should he deal with this; he’d rather seclude himself in the four cubits of Torah study, etc., and not get involved with such a “land”! Or he might argue, where can he find the strength not to be affected by all this, and to continue studying Torah and doing mitvzos, and educating his children not to conform to this “way of the land”? The story of the spies teaches us that in fact, Hashem does want us to go to “Eretz Canaan” and transform it into the “Eretz Yisrael.” And a Jew has the ability to do it because “the Holy One, blessed be He, assists him,” and he has the “Yehoshua and Calev” within himself, which empower him to see that “the land is very, very good.”
