Synopsis
Shavuos is associated with Jewish unity, as the Midrash states, “If the Jewish people lacked even one person, the Divine Presence would not have been revealed to them…”; similarly, in the days leading up to Shavuos, “Yisrael camped there” in the singular – “as one man with one heart.” This is one of the reasons for a farbrengen – gathering Jews together – on the last day of the Tashlumin for Shavuos. Tashlumin doesn’t only mean “filling in” what was lacking, but also “perfection.” This aspect of Tashlumin applies (a) to every Jew, because even if someone’s service on Shavuos wasn’t lacking, he can always achieve a higher level of perfection; and (b) for “all seven days” from the beginning of Shavuos until the 12th of Sivan, because one can become more perfect every day. Therefore, the 12th of Sivan, the final day of Tashlumin, is the appropriate time to complete all aspects of Shavuos with the utmost perfection!
