ענין ז' חשון – שבו היו העולים לרגל של חג הסוכות – שהשמחה בחג זה, "חג האסיף", היתה הגדולה ביותר מבין ג' הרגלים – יוצאים מא"י לחו"ל (ולכן לא היו שואלים גשמים עד יום זה. וגם בזמן שאין ביהמ"ק הנציחו זאת: בא"י נשאר הדין שמתחילים לשאול גשמים בז' חשון, וכן בענין שנוגע לסוחרים – שכאשר כותבים בשטר התאריך "אחר הרגל" הכוונה היא לז' חשון), הוא – לחבר את הקדושה והשמחה שהיתה בביהמ"ק, שכל זמן שהיו בא"י היו עדיין תחת רושם זה, עם החולין. ובזמננו: עד ז' חשון עומדים עדיין תחת הרושם של קדושת ימי חודש תשרי ובמיוחד שמח"ת, אבל גם למחרת, בחיי היום-יומיים ובעניני החולין של כאו"א, צ"ל ניכר החילוק שנעשה בהם כתוצאה מרושם זה. עיקר הקדושה בביהמ"ק הי' בקדה"ק מקום הארון – ענין הלוחות וספר תורה. וזהו תפקיד הישיבות בכלל וישיבת תומכי-תמימים בפרט – החדרת ענין התורה, מתוך חיות ושמחה, בכל בית יהודי.

7 Cheshvan marks the day when the pilgrims would reach the border of Eretz Yisrael on their way home from the pilgrimage for Sukkos. This is why they would wait until this day to start asking for rain, a law that remains in practice even today. Additionally, in business transactions, when a document sets a time of “after the festival,” without providing a specific date, the default date is 7 Cheshvan. The role of this day, which marks the boundary between the inspiration of Simchas Torah and the beginning of mundane life, is to merge the two, such that the impact of Simchas Torah can be seen in how one lives his daily life. The holiest part of the Beis Hamikdash was the Holy of Holies, the place of the Aron – which housed the Luchos and the Sefer Torah. And this is the function of a yeshiva, especially Tomchei Temimim – to make Torah permeate every Jewish home, with joy and passion.
