01.05a – Predators
Description
It’s a dog eat dog world. It’s also a dog eat vole, apple, scat, and roadkill kind of world. For all but the autotrophs, getting a meal can be a real hassle, mostly because your prey have a nasty little habit of trying to avoid getting eaten. But as they say, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Predators have to earn their sustenance. They must be ever-vigilant in sussing out chinks in the armor, vulnerabilities in the ramparts, flaws in the camouflage of their prey. With the answer to Why must one eat – all organisms must eat to survive. At the buffet of life, predators must find answers to the other enduring evolutionary questions: Who, What, When, Where, and How to eat. In this episode we look at some of the answers to these questions. In the next episode we’ll throw a wrench in their plans and ask prey just what they’re going to do about it.
