Shajar, the Sultan’s chief wife, has taken something of value from the Hafiz, a drunk, self-pitying religious figure-head. Gregor, the Sultan's spymaster, is determined to find out what it is and what mischief she is planning. Marching with the army out to the provinces, reluctant soldier Madu, finds solace in an unlikely companion.
