A massive decline of insects in the world is more significant and alarming than the amount of news coverage would suggest. Of the million and a half species we've named so far on the Earth, one million are insects. Yet there are far fewer insects on the planet today than there have been in the past. Top biologist and insect specialist Dave Goulson discusses biodiversity declines generally, and the huge threat associated with the accompanying insect decline. He articulates the causes and consequences, and what we must do to reverse this frightening decline, focusing on urban areas and farmland.

Dave Goulson is Professor of Biology at the University of Sussex. His most recent book is Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse.
