Os Clutter eram uma família rica do Kansas que moravam em uma pequena cidade chamada Holcomb, nos Estados Unidos, onde todo mundo se conhecia. O patriarca, Herbert, cuidava da fazenda de trigo e nunca teve problemas com ninguém. Mas, em novembro de 1959, algo terrível aconteceu. Isso faz com que o jovem jornalista Truman Capote passe a investigar de perto aquela comunidade e, quem sabe, encontrar um responsável.
