We’re talking about communication. Kate and I were just in Paris conducting interviews with METI scientists - and we’ll be releasing all of that content soon - but one of things we ran into was - a language barrier.

Even basic communication became difficult - and that doesn’t even take into account nuances within shared language. Biscuit. Post. Pants. Rocket. All of these words are common to American and British English, but we understand them differently across the Atlantic.

Now let’s imagine something entirely alien. A civilization from another planet might communicate in smell, or by transmitting chemical signals. How can we hope to connect?
