00:01:05
About warped perspectives, sinister opportunities, and mechanical malevolence.
00:01:13
I'm your host, Jeff Stert event.
00:01:16
And tonight, and every Wednesday night, I'll be your guide as we traverse the dimly lit corridors of your darkest dreams.
00:01:26
We're also thrilled to announce a new feature for our Wednesday episodes.
00:01:30
A guest narrator will join us every week, showcasing their talents and bringing new voices into the spotlight.
00:01:38
Tonight, our guest is none other than Dr.
00:01:41
Creepin, the mastermind behind Dr.
00:01:45
Creepin's fault on YouTube, and host of the weekly podcast, Dr.
00:01:50
Creepin's Dungeon.
00:01:52
He'll be performing all of tonight's tales and giving us a taste of his remarkable storytelling abilities.
00:01:59
Dr.
00:01:59
Creepin, welcome to the show.
00:02:03
Why don't you tell our audience a little about yourself?
00:02:06
Where are you from and how did you begin your journey into horror narration?
00:02:11
Thank you, Jeff, and it's an honor to be here.
00:02:14
Well, I hail from the Mishradded Hills of England.
00:02:17
Land steeped in ancient folklore and shadowed legend.
00:02:21
Perhaps surrounded by those whispers of the past had a profound impact on me, sparking a lifelong fascination with storytelling and the uncanny.
00:02:30
These days, I live in Maustricht in the Netherlands, a city with its own rich blend of history and mystery.
00:02:36
Maustricht, that's fascinating.
00:02:39
How is living there influenced your work?
00:02:42
It's been incredible, Jeff.
00:02:44
Maustricht's history is blend of old world charm and modern intrigue has given me a deeper appreciation for the tales that connect us.
00:02:52
During the day, I'm a university lecturer, focused on teaching and inspiring my students.
00:02:58
In the evenings, I take on a very different role.
00:03:01
One that lets me explore the darker side of storytelling and share those unsettling narratives with an audience that craves them.
00:03:07
It's clear that storytelling runs deep for you.
00:03:11
What drew you to horror in particular?
00:03:14
The horror taps into something, Brian.
00:03:17
Our deepest fears, our curiosity about the unknown.
00:03:21
And even our own mortality.
00:03:23
It's an ancient art, a ritual of connection.
00:03:27
Every time I sit down to a narrated tale, it's like stepping into a tradition that's been with humanity since the beginning.
00:03:33
Beautifully put, Dr.
00:03:34
Creepen.
00:03:35
It's clear that your passion for storytelling runs deep.
00:03:38
And tonight, we're fortunate to have you bring that passion to life with three unforgettable yarns.
00:03:46
So, without further delay, let's dive into our first offering of the night.
00:03:55
Our first tale this evening, written by Darius McCorkendale, will be brought to life by none other than Dr.
00:04:01
Creepen himself.
00:04:03
In it, a man suffering from a profound psychological condition discovers that reality may be even stranger and more orchestrated than he ever imagined.
00:04:17
The question is, who's truly in control?
00:04:22
Now, without further ado, here's Dr.
00:04:25
Creepen with.
00:04:27
Take me to the pilot.
00:04:30
Who the fuck am I, Doctor?
00:04:36
What happened to who I was?
00:04:39
There's a doctorate's normal for such patience.
00:04:42
Utzly at the end of their tether to resort to such language, even though we doctors are supposed to enjoy a degree of formality not reserve for other walks of life.
00:04:51
At this point in my career, I pay it no mind.
00:04:54
Thank you for agreeing to undergo the physical exam, Elton.
00:04:58
I began.
00:04:59
And also agreeing to discuss your complete medical history with me before we begin.
00:05:04
That should greatly expedite my ability to diagnose what's happening here.
00:05:09
He was obviously in a very bad way.
00:05:12
The signs of sleep deprivation were wrought into his features.
00:05:15
He was adrift in a sea of nothingness and was close to drowning.
00:05:20
I just don't want to feel like this anymore.
00:05:23
Whatever it takes.
00:05:26
I'd seen this many times before.
00:05:28
As an expert in this particular field of human existentialism, I already knew the exact problem, but for the sake of appearances I needed to let the patient work through the process on his own.
00:05:39
After all, this patient was still more than salvageable.
00:05:43
Well, now that we've used various diagnostic tests, including imaging studies and blood tests to rule out physical illness or medication side effects is the cause of the symptoms.
00:05:54
I pause to give him time to take this all in.
00:05:57
I think it's time for us to discuss what else it could be.
00:06:01
At this point, I'd like you just to tell me how you feel on a day-to-day basis.
00:06:07
Oh, I don't even really know where to begin.
00:06:10
I do, but it's important for this next stage of the process to come from him as much as it possibly can.
00:06:18
Take your time.
00:06:19
It's important to diagnose this that you put your feelings into your own work.
00:06:25
I guess I feel like I have...
00:06:27
Well, a distorted perception of my own body.
00:06:30
I don't know how to really describe it, but it's not in a way that makes any sense.
00:06:35
I guess I kind of feel like I'm a robot, or I'm in a dream.
00:06:40
I might feel I'm going crazy, might become depressed, anxious, God, or worse.
00:06:46
I nodded, taking in Elton's words.
00:06:49
Elton, once your describing sounds a lot like "depersonalization disorder", it's a condition where people feel disconnected or detached from their own body and thoughts.
00:07:00
This is if you're observing yourself from outside your body or living in a dream.
00:07:05
He looked at me with a mixture of confusion and desperation.
00:07:09
So I'm not going crazy.
00:07:12
Oh, you're not losing touch with reality.
00:07:15
People with a depersonalization disorder are very much aware that they're, well, what they're experiencing isn't normal, which is what makes it so distressing.
00:07:24
Episodes can last for a short time or, in some cases, for many years, affecting daily functioning.
00:07:31
"Oh, what cause is it?"
00:07:32
he asked.
00:07:33
His voice barely above a whisper.
00:07:36
The exact cause isn't well understood, but it can be triggered by intense stress or traumatic events, such as abuse, accidents, or violence.
00:07:44
It's one of several dissociative disorders which involve disruptions in memory, consciousness, and identity.
00:07:51
He took a deep breath, trying to process the information.
00:07:56
Is there any way to make it stop?
00:07:59
Well, treatment typically involves psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioural therapy, to help you manage your symptoms.
00:08:07
And in some cases, medication might be prescribed to address underlying issues like anxiety or depression, but the first step is understanding what you're dealing with, and from there,
00:08:17
we can work together on a treatment plan.
00:08:20
Elton nodded slowly.
00:08:23
"I just want to feel normal again."
00:08:26
And I understand, and with the right approach, we can work towards that goal.
00:08:31
You're not alone in this Elton.
00:08:33
We'll take it step by step.
00:08:35
Elton nodded slowly.
00:08:37
"I just want to feel normal again."
00:08:40
I understand Elton.
00:08:42
Now let's talk about how we can work towards that.
00:08:45
Most people with depersonalization disorder seek treatment because of symptoms like depression or anxiety.
00:08:51
Not always the depersonalization itself.
00:08:54
Now sometimes these symptoms go away on their own over time.
00:08:58
But when they don't, or if they're particularly distressing, treatment can help.
00:09:04
So what kind of treatment are we talking about?
00:09:07
The goal of your treatment is to address the stress and triggers associated with the onset of the disorder.
00:09:13
The best approach depends on your individual situation and the severity of your symptoms.
00:09:18
Psychotherapy, especially talk therapy, is usually the primary treatment.
00:09:23
Cognitive therapy can help change any dysfunctional thinking patterns you might have.
00:09:28
"Well, I need medication."
00:09:31
Ugh, let's take things a little slower, Elton.
00:09:34
Relications are not typically used to treat depersonalization disorder directly.
00:09:38
However, if you're experiencing significant depression or anxiety, an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication might be helpful.
00:09:46
And sometimes anti-psychotic medications are used to help with disorder thinking and perception.
00:09:52
Elton has shifted in his seat, considering the option.
00:09:56
"What about my family?
00:09:58
I don't understand what I'm going through."
00:10:01
Family therapy can be beneficial.
00:10:03
How else to educate your family about the disorder and its causes?
00:10:07
And it can also help them recognize the symptoms if they recur.
00:10:11
This support system can be very important for your recovery.
00:10:15
Are there any other types of therapy that might help?
00:10:18
Yes, creative therapies like art or music therapy can provide a safe and expressive way to explore your thoughts and feelings.
00:10:26
Clinical hypnosis is another option.
00:10:28
It uses intense relaxation and concentration to explore thoughts and memories that might be contributing to your symptom.
00:10:36
"Um, what's the outlook for me then?
00:10:40
Can I really recover from it?"
00:10:41
Well, the good news is that many patients do recover completely from depersonalization disorder.
00:10:47
The symptoms often go away on their own or after effective treatment that helps address the underlying stress or trauma.
00:10:54
However, without treatment, additional episodes can occur.
00:10:58
With their eye support and treatment plan, we can work towards your recovery.
00:11:03
Elton took a deep breath, a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
00:11:07
"Alright, let's do this and I'm ready to start."
00:11:11
"Good, we'll take it step by step together."
00:11:15
I then lean forward slightly, my tone gentle but firm.
00:11:20
Elton is one treatment that might provide it more immediate really.
00:11:25
It's called clinical hypnosis.
00:11:27
By guiding you into a deeply relaxed state, we can explore your subconscious and potentially uncover the root causes of your depersonalization.
00:11:37
Elton's eyebrows furrowed in skepticism.
00:11:40
"Well, hypnosis.
00:11:42
You think that will actually work?"
00:11:44
"I understand your doubts," I replied.
00:11:47
"Well, hypnosis can be a powerful tool."
00:11:50
It allows us to access parts of your mind that are usually hidden, bringing buried memories and feelings to the surface.
00:11:56
Many patients find it really helps to make significant breakthrough.
00:12:00
Elton hesitated, glancing around the sterile office.
00:12:04
"I don't know, it sounds kind of out there."
00:12:09
"You're right to be cautious," I said nodding.
00:12:13
"But consider this, you're here because traditional methods haven't worked."
00:12:17
"This is another option, one that could bring you relief faster than talk therapy or medication.
00:12:22
And I'll be with you every step of the way."
00:12:27
A long silence stretched out between us as Elton weighed his options.
00:12:31
Finally, he sighed, having some resignation and hope in his eyes.
00:12:37
"All right, I'll try it.
00:12:40
What do I have to do?"
00:12:42
"Ah, excellent," I said.
00:12:45
"I hopefully reassuring smile on my face."
00:12:48
"Now, let's get started."
00:12:52
Elton settled back into the chair, feeling a flutter of nerves in his stomach.
00:12:57
I dimmed the lights and began speaking in a calm, rhythmic voice, guiding Elton through deep breathing exercises.
00:13:05
"Focus on your breath," I instructed.
00:13:09
In hell slowly through your nose, hold it, and exhale through your mouth.
00:13:18
Elton followed along, feeling his body gradually relaxed.
00:13:22
"My voice was soothing and steady."
00:13:25
"Imagine a peaceful place," I continued.
00:13:29
"Somewhere you feel completely safe and calm, picture it in your mind and let yourself drift there."
00:13:37
A warm sensation spread through Elton's limbs as he visualized a tranquil beach, the gentle waves lapping at the shore.
00:13:44
His eyelids grew heavy and my voice had now become his only anchor to reality.
00:13:50
"Ah, you're doing well, Elton."
00:13:52
I softly murmured.
00:13:54
"Now, I want you to go deeper, add yourself sink into a state of complete relaxation."
00:14:00
With each breath, feel yourself going deeper and deeper.
00:14:06
Elton fell as though he was floating, weightless and free.
00:14:10
"My voice guided him further, urging him to explore the recesses of his mind."
00:14:15
"Not safe here," I said.
00:14:18
"I want you to go back to a time when you first felt disconnected, and now the memory is to come to the surface."
00:14:26
Images began to flicker in Elton's mind, fragmented at first, then gradually forming a coherent picture.
00:14:33
He saw himself as a child standing alone in a dark room.
00:14:37
The sense of detachment washed over him, more intense than ever before.
00:14:41
"Now, tell me what you see," I prompted gently.
00:14:46
"I-I'm in my old house," Elton said, his voice distanced and hollow.
00:14:51
"It's dark and I feel so alone."
00:14:56
"Good," I replied.
00:14:59
"Let's explore this memory together."
00:15:01
"What happens next?"

00:15:41
As Elton delved deeper into his past, the details of his childhood began to unfold, revealing the moments of fear and isolation that had shaped his experience of the world.
00:15:52
My voice remained a constant guide helping him to navigate the labyrinth of his subconscious.
00:15:58
With each revelation, Elton felt a way lifting from him, a long buried emotion surfacing and dissipating.
00:16:05
He was beginning to understand the origins of his depersonalization, and for the first time in a while he felt a glimmer of hope.
00:16:14
As Elton's breathing slowed and his body relaxed further into the chair, he observed him with an almost clinical detachment.
00:16:21
I maintained my soothing tone, but my mind was focused on the next phase of my plan.
00:16:27
"You're doing very well, Elton."
00:16:30
I said my voice steady.
00:16:32
"Now I want you to go even deeper.
00:16:34
Let your mind drift until you reach a state of complete relaxation."
00:16:39
Elton's eyes fluttered closed and his body went limp.
00:16:43
I continued to murmur softly, guiding Elton into a semi-comato state.
00:16:48
One satisfied that Elton was deeply under, I stood up and crossed the room to a cabinet, revealing a sleek piece of scientific equipment.
00:16:56
I returned to Elton's side, carefully attaching the apparatus to his head.
00:17:02
The device resembled a futuristic helmet with electrodes and sensors that monitor brain activity and display it on a nearby screen.
00:17:10
I adjusted the setting, so my eyes flicking to the monitor as it powered up.
00:17:15
The screen quickly hummed to life, displaying a detailed image of Elton's brain.
00:17:21
Fans of electrical activity danced across the display, revealing the inner workings of his mind.
00:17:27
I watched it intently, my expression of mix of curiosity and satisfaction.
00:17:33
I activate the neural resonance scanner.
00:17:36
I instructed my unseen assistant through a small intercom device on my desk.
00:17:41
A moment later, my assistant entered the room, a young technician with a clipboard.
00:17:46
She nodded and began adjusting additional controls on the apparatus, by inching the settings to enhance the resolution of the brain scan.
00:17:55
"Good," I muttered, "more to myself and my assistant."
00:17:59
"Now let's see what we're dealing with."
00:18:02
Screen's image sharpened, and the intricate details of Elton's brain became clearer.
00:18:07
I leaned further in, studying in the neural pathways and synaptic connection.
00:18:12
I was searching for any specific anomalies, patterns that might otherwise explain the profound disconnection Elton felt from his body, apart from what I already knew to be the true reason.
00:18:25
There, I whispered, went into a cluster of unusual activity deep within the temporal lobe, increased the magnification on this section.
00:18:35
My assistant complied, and the image zoomed in on the targeted area.
00:18:39
My eyes narrowed as I scrutinized the display.
00:18:42
I had of course seen similar patterns before, but never with such clarity.
00:18:48
It was as if Elton's brain was broadcasting a signal, a distress call from within the depths of his subconscious.
00:18:55
"Alright, prepare the neural interface," I ordered.
00:18:59
"We need to delve deeper into this anomaly."
00:19:02
My assistant hurried to set up another piece of equipment, a sleek console with a series of complex controls.
00:19:09
As she worked, I continued to monitor the screen, my mind racing with possibility.
00:19:14
This was, of course, no ordinary case of depersonalization disorder.
00:19:20
There was something unique about Elton's brain, something that held the key to understanding the human mind's most profound mysteries, well, and our continued presence here.
00:19:29
With a neural interface ready, I began the delicate process of linking it to the apparatus already attached Elton's head.
00:19:36
This would allow me to interact directly with the neural signals, exploring the depths of Elton's subconscious in ways traditional therapy could never achieve.
00:19:45
"Elton," I said softly, even though I knew the young man could not respond in his current state.
00:19:52
We're going to find out what's really happening inside your mind.
00:19:56
And with any luck, we'll finally bring you some peace.
00:20:00
As the neural interface established its connection, I took a deep breath, ready to plunge into the uncharted territories of Elton's psyche.
00:20:10
The neural interface hummed as it established its connection with Elton's subconscious.
00:20:15
I adjusted my headset and the images on the screen shifted, providing a direct view into the intricate neural landscape of Elton's mind.
00:20:23
I focused intently searching for the signal I knew was there.
00:20:28
After a few moments, the connection stabilized, and a new voice resonated within my mind.
00:20:35
"I let Torpin," I said.
00:20:38
"My voice filled with a barely controlled anger.
00:20:41
Do you realize the damage you've caused by neglecting your duty?"
00:20:47
There was a pause followed by a petulant reply from within the depths of Elton's mind.
00:20:53
"This human is boring," Torpin complained.
00:20:57
Being his neuropilot is no fun at all.
00:21:01
He's so predictable, so mundane.
00:21:05
I clenched my jaw, struggling to keep my temper in chat.
00:21:09
Maintaining the mission is all important, Torpin.
00:21:13
We have protocols for a reason.
00:21:15
Too many humans are waking up to their realities, and your negligence is contributing to the problem.
00:21:22
Torpin's voice, echoing through the neural pathways, carried a tone of indifference.
00:21:29
"Protocols, missions, it's all so tedious.
00:21:33
Why should I care if a few humans start questioning their reality?
00:21:37
Well, they can do anything about it."
00:21:40
My eyes narrowed as I studied the patterns on the screen, observing the chaotic flux of neural signals that reflected Torpin's rebellious attitude.
00:21:49
Your job is to ensure that they don't question it, Torpin.
00:21:53
By allowing Elton to experience such severe depersonalization, you've jeopardized the integrity of his mind and our entire operation.
00:22:02
Torpin's side, sound that reverberated through Elton's brain.
00:22:07
"You just don't understand, doctor.
00:22:09
The monotony of this existence is unbearable.
00:22:12
I need more stimulation, more excitement."
00:22:17
I leaned closer to the screen, my voice dropping to a menacing whisper.
00:22:22
If you can't handle the responsibilities of your position, you can find a replacement you can.
00:22:29
Your indulgence in seeking excitement has nearly cost us this human.
00:22:33
Indeed, it is his very mundanity that we've honed in on.
00:22:37
He's earmarked for high political office in the future.
00:22:40
We need him to fulfill his potential so we can increase our influence over this species.
00:22:46
I remember Torpin.
00:22:48
The mission is paramount and you will adhere to your duty.
00:22:53
There was a long silence.
00:22:55
The neural pathway is crackling with tension.
00:22:58
Finally, Torpin spoke again.
00:23:00
His tone begrudging.
00:23:03
"Fine, I'll do what you ask."
00:23:06
Remember, doctor, without a bit of freedom, even the most loyal pilot can become resentful.
00:23:13
I took a deep breath, slightly easing the grip of my anger.
00:23:17
A resentment or not, you will maintain your human and ensure he remains stable.
00:23:23
We can't afford any more risks.
00:23:26
Now, begin the recalibration process.
00:23:29
Restore Elton's perception of reality and eliminate any residual anomaly.
00:23:35
Reluctantly, Torpin complied, and I watched as the neural activity on the screen began to stabilize.
00:23:42
Atons of normal series emerged, and the chaotic signals smoothed into harmonious rhythms.
00:23:49
"Good," I said.
00:23:51
"My voice steady once more."
00:23:53
I remember Torpin.
00:23:55
The success of our mission depends on the seamless integration of our presence within these humans.
00:24:00
We cannot allow any deviation from the established protocol.
00:24:05
As the connection began to fade, Torpin's final words lingered in the doctor's mind.
00:24:11
I understood, Doctor.
00:24:13
But don't forget, even the best-gave secrets have a way of coming to life.
00:24:19
I removed the headset inside, rubbing my temples.
00:24:23
I knew that the delicate balance they maintained was constantly under threat.
00:24:27
And I could only hope that Torpin and others like him would remember the importance of our mission.
00:24:34
For now, Elton's mind was stable again.
00:24:37
I remained vigilant, knowing that the battle to maintain control over humanity was never truly over.
00:24:44
I hope you enjoyed, take me to the pilot, as written by Darius McCorkendale, and narrated by our guest co-host,
00:24:56
Dr.
00:24:56
Creepen.
00:24:57
The pleasure is all mine, Jeff.
00:25:00
Thank you again for having me.
00:25:02
We're glad to have you.
00:25:04
If you enjoyed the doc's performance listeners, and stay tuned.
00:25:08
Because they'll soon be bringing to life, one of Chilling Tales creator Craig Groeschek's original works.
00:25:14
Stay in your car.
00:25:16
On his own channel.
00:25:18
More details on that coming up after our next story.
00:25:22
Before we continue, I'd like to tell you about something that we hear are very proud of.

00:26:18
Now, back to the chills.
00:26:22
That first tale was truly unsettling, Dr.
00:26:25
Creepen.
00:26:26
Since you're lending us your voice tonight, how would you like to do us the honors of introducing our next piece?
00:26:32
I'd be delighted, yet.
00:26:34
Our second tale, so by Darius McCorkendale, tells the story of a young man driven to accept a mysterious job offer, only to discover that the cost of financial freedom may be far greater than he ever imagined.
00:26:47
Zibak, relax and allow me to bring to life the story of the job offer.
00:26:53
The handwritten sign plastered to his door was not something he could admit.
00:27:00
Ren, do on Monday.
00:27:02
Don't be fucking late this time.
00:27:05
I'm living with his best mate sister had been working out reasonably well, and to be fair, he felt terrible about being behind on Ren so often.
00:27:13
But he still wished Hazel would find a less passive-aggressive way of reminding it.
00:27:17
Yeah,
01:11:10
if only his parents had bought him his own place after he graduated college, he'd get to be the one behaving like an overprivileged asshole, might reflect it, before tearing the sign of the door and entering his bedroom.
00:27:31
He flopped down onto his bed, exhausted after another morning of fruitless job searching.
00:27:36
He knew he'd have to face facts, things were getting tough, and he would simply have to accept anything that came along sooner rather than later.
00:27:47
All he had to show for his efforts today was that interview at the fast food place scheduled for next week.
00:27:54
As he got comfortable, he had a crunching sound in his pocket, I remember the flyer that he'd been given earlier.
00:28:01
He took it out and looked it again.
00:28:04
He'd been handed this piece of paper by some random guy as he was leaving the subway.
00:28:08
He'd taken it more out of politeness than anything else, fully intending to throw it in the next garbage can he came across.
00:28:15
Now, actually taking the time to read it, he was glad he hadn't done that.
00:28:21
Well, there was scarcely any details, but it was enough information to peak his interest.
00:28:26
Exciting job opportunity for the right candidate.
00:28:29
The excellent pay.
00:28:31
No experience required.
00:28:32
Call this number.
00:28:35
Well, I am at that point where I just need to do something to bring money in, so why the hell not?
00:28:43
Quitefully this was said just loud enough for Hazel to overhear.
00:28:48
Anyway, what harm could it do to give the number a call he thought to himself?
00:28:52
And so we dialed the number.
00:28:55
The person on the other hand picked up immediately.
00:28:58
Good afternoon, Mr.
00:28:59
Fethiston.
00:29:01
A female voice, not particularly unpleasant to the ear, but not hinting at any emotion either.
00:29:07
Yes, um, hello.
00:29:08
Wait a minute.
00:29:10
How do you know my name?
00:29:13
This is Mr.
00:29:13
Fethiston who received our contact details in the tube station earlier today.
00:29:18
Is it not?
00:29:20
Yes, but...
00:29:22
We're happy that you've chosen to get back to us so quickly, Mr.
00:29:25
Fethiston.
00:29:26
We would like to schedule an appointment to discuss this opportunity with you later this afternoon.
00:29:30
The location is only about a 10 minute walk from your apartment.
00:29:34
What do you think of this afternoon?
00:29:35
Be good for you.
00:29:38
Hmm.
00:29:39
How does she know where I live?
00:29:41
He used.
00:29:42
This was all extremely weird, but those two words, excellent pay, were enough to motivate him.
00:29:49
Sure.
00:29:51
Yes, he has fine.
00:29:52
Good.
00:29:54
Please come along to the following address at that time.
00:29:57
Mr.
00:29:57
Elliott is eager to meet you.
00:30:00
Well, what harm could it do to go along?
00:30:02
He thought to himself.
00:30:04
It was just around the corner after all.
00:30:09
What the hell am I doing here?
00:30:12
He thought, sitting in the lobby of an old but elegant office building which was indeed only a few minutes away from where he lived.
00:30:20
The man at the front desk had ignored him, while apart from pointing him in the direction of the bench he was now sitting on.
00:30:27
The building was so nondescript that he could honestly say he'd never even acknowledged his existence, despite having walked past it hundreds of times in the last couple of years.
00:30:37
However, he didn't have much time to ponder this, as he was soon greeted by the imposing figure of the gentleman who'd requested his presence.
00:30:45
Ugh, Mr.
00:30:46
Featherstone.
00:30:48
So nice of you to come at such short notice.
00:30:51
Oh, um, call me Mike, please.
00:30:53
No, I shall stick to Mr.
00:30:55
Featherstone.
00:30:57
Mine is a business that requires formality.
00:30:59
I'm sure you'll come to understand this soon enough.
00:31:03
Well, this was not a man to be messed with.
00:31:06
That much Mike could tell.
00:31:08
Now, do follow me to my office.
00:31:12
Again, this was not negotiable.
00:31:14
Mr.
00:31:14
Elliott was already halfway there.
00:31:17
He broke into a light jog, not wanting to seem rude by lagging behind.
00:31:22
Now, take a seat, Mr.
00:31:24
Featherstone.
00:31:26
Oh, thanks, Mike said, with drawing the copy of his resume from his bag in preparation for the coming interview.
00:31:34
Perhaps I can give this...
00:31:37
That won't be necessary, Mr.
00:31:38
Featherstone.
00:31:40
We're already somewhat familiar with you as a candidate.
00:31:43
We don't make offers such as this to random strangers.
00:31:47
Well, okay then, thank you for...
00:31:51
Mike was once again cut off.
00:31:54
This is not an interview in the conventional sense.
00:31:58
I will explain our requirements.
00:32:00
I will discuss the financial compensation, then you should be given time to consider this information before coming to a decision.
00:32:08
Mr.
00:32:08
Elliott then looked directly into Mike's eyes, pausing his little speed.
00:32:15
Okay, Mr.
00:32:16
Elliott.
00:32:18
Well, Mike was at a complete loss as to what to do or say at this point.
00:32:22
Good.
00:32:24
Now, here's my offer to you.
00:32:30
Hazel, are you in there, Mike asked, knocking on her bedroom door.
00:32:35
A few seconds later, she groggily opened the door.
00:32:39
Mike, you know I work nights?
00:32:42
Is it important?
00:32:44
Damn, he'd forgotten about her shift work.
00:32:47
Sorry, Hazel.
00:32:49
I just wanted to pay up what I owe you.
00:32:51
Here you go.
00:32:52
He handed over an envelope, stashed with his...
00:32:55
for once, not over due rent.
00:32:58
Bloody hell, Mike.
00:33:00
In cash, did you rob a bank or something?
00:33:03
He couldn't help but smile.
00:33:06
No, not quite.
00:33:07
Look, something's come up and they paid me an advance for my first gig, so here you go.
00:33:13
I don't think I want to ask any more questions, do I?
00:33:17
Maybe not.
00:33:20
Mike couldn't help but feel a little sheepish.
00:33:23
Handling over a sizable water of cash must have looked a little odd.
00:33:26
He had to admit.
00:33:28
Don't worry, though.
00:33:29
It is legit.
00:33:31
Hazel gave a slight smile in response.
00:33:34
The first time she'd done that to him in a long while.
00:33:37
Thanks, Mike.
00:33:38
I'm sorry about that note earlier.
00:33:41
You know how I can get sometimes.
00:33:43
I think nothing of it.
00:33:46
She widened her smile and closed her door.
00:33:49
Well, things were looking up already.
00:33:52
All he had to do now was wait for the call.
00:33:55
Two days, Elliot had said.
00:33:57
Friday evening, just before midnight, at the address given.
00:34:00
And all sounded simple enough.
00:34:03
Mike would be working as a personal assistant to an exceptional client of Mr.
00:34:08
Elliot's.
00:34:09
It would be there for a short period to help him out in whatever way was necessary.
00:34:13
This would be a one-off occasion, after which he would not see that particular client again, unless requested to do so.
00:34:20
As a gesture of goodwill, I could be paid an advance through his first assignment.
00:34:25
He hadn't been kidding when he said the pay was good.
00:34:29
Well, if this went well, Mike was very least out of financial trouble for a while.
00:34:34
Of course, the goodwill gesture did come with a caveat.
00:34:39
Even if Mike decided to quit after the first assignment, he'd have to go through with this one job, whatever it entailed.
00:34:46
Now, time to wait and see what adventures Friday night would bring.
00:34:53
Well, what's this place?
00:34:56
Well, it wasn't the address that had been hard to find.
00:34:59
It was just that he couldn't imagine anyone wanting to be here, let alone some exclusive client of Mr.
00:35:05
Elliot.
00:35:06
This was smack in the middle of the city's most dilapidated industrial estate.
00:35:11
He'd gotten an Uber to as close as possible, but even the driver wouldn't bring him all the way to the door.
00:35:17
He had to walk the last half mile or so and was in real danger of being late.
00:35:22
What was going on here?
00:35:25
Mike approached the door, feeling more than my old trepidation.
00:35:30
Before he had the chance to knock, the door was opened and a giant of a man stepped out to greet him.
00:35:36
"Hi, I..."
00:35:39
Once again, Mike didn't get the chance to finish his sentence.
00:35:43
"First door on the left.
00:35:45
Get changed and await instructions.
00:35:47
Oh, be quick about it."
00:35:50
The security guard then bounded him inside and slammed the door behind it.
00:35:55
Mike found the room and entered.
00:35:58
Whatever he might have expected to see, it certainly wasn't this.
00:36:03
A full hazmat suit, and this thing was the real deal, too.
00:36:08
He was starting to get more of an idea as to why he'd been paid so handsomely.
00:36:13
No job requiring him to wear this would be easy, all pleasant.
00:36:17
I'd make sure you put that on properly, Mr.
00:36:20
Featherstone.
00:36:22
Mike recognized that voice.
00:36:25
He was starting to understand that it was also one he was never likely to forget.
00:36:30
Mr.
00:36:30
Elliott, what the hell's going on here?
00:36:35
As I stated, a significant client of mine has need of your assistance.
00:36:40
He can be found on the third floor.
00:36:42
Your assignment is to merely perform what I like to refer to as post-task completion.
00:36:49
What?
00:36:51
Well, if his intention was to confuse Mike, it was certainly working.
00:36:56
I think of it this way.
00:36:58
If someone were cooking a meal, the meal itself would be the fulfillment of the task.
00:37:04
Sitting down with a loved one and cutting into that steak, and enjoying a nice glass of red is what the whole experience is about.
00:37:11
And of course, no one wants to think about washing the dishes afterwards.
00:37:16
Nonetheless, the dishes need to be cleaned.
00:37:19
That is what I mean by post-task completion.
00:37:23
So, I'm here to clean up afterwards.
00:37:27
Yes, Mr.
00:37:28
Featherstone, indeed you are.
00:37:31
The creepiest smile Mike had ever seen slowly emerged in Elliott's expression.
00:37:37
Now, as this is your first assignment, I'll be accompanying you to make sure all goes smoothly.
00:37:46
Mike had a feeling he wasn't going to be washing dirty dishes.
00:37:50
He followed Elliott to the elevator.
00:37:52
He pressed three and they began their ascension.
00:37:56
Mr.
00:37:56
Elliott exited and made his way to a door some way down to the right.
00:38:01
As previously, Mike found himself having to half-jog to catch up.
00:38:05
He stopped at the door, turning to Mike with a look as cold as death on his face.
00:38:12
Time to honour our agreement, Michael.
00:38:16
There was something about Mr.
00:38:17
Elliott's use of Mike's first name that utterly terrified him.
00:38:22
He then proceeded to open the door.
00:38:28
Hi Mike, how's your first day?
00:38:32
Hazel had an overly comfortable habit of walking around the apartment scantily dressed to the extent that Mike had, tomorrow, often the not, mentally remind himself that this was his best mate's sister.
00:38:44
Not tonight though.
00:38:45
His mind was elsewhere.
00:38:49
Rough first shift.
00:38:52
Don't really want to talk about it.
00:38:54
Oh, sorry to hear that.
00:38:56
I hope it gets easier from now on.
00:38:59
Thanks, um, actually.
00:39:02
I think I might go to that interview on Monday.
00:39:04
Might be good to weigh out my options.
00:39:07
Whatever works for you, Mike.
00:39:09
She gave him a quick peck on the cheek.
00:39:12
Just remember that.
00:39:13
Rents due again next month here.
00:39:15
He was scarcely listening though.
00:39:18
A rough first shift.
00:39:20
Didn't do what he'd seen and done any kind of justice at all.
00:39:25
He didn't know what he'd been expecting to see when Elliot opened that door.
00:39:29
But it turned out to be a scene that was now burned into his psyche forever.
00:39:34
This will be a, uh, pretty tough cleanup.
00:39:37
So take as much time as you need.
00:39:40
Just make sure you do the job properly.
00:39:43
And at that, Elliot, who turned and left.
00:39:48
While the room was poorly lit, it was hard to make out what that coppery brown mess was that coated the walls.
00:39:56
Elliot followed Elliot's advice and put the suit on properly, meaning he was also using his breathing apparatus.
00:40:02
Had he not done so?
00:40:04
He would have by now recognized the stench of fresh blood.
00:40:08
His eyes met a figure.
00:40:10
Dressed in what appeared to be a full butcher's garb.
00:40:13
Slowly, but precisely, removing what were clearly the last few remaining chunks of flesh from the corpse in front of him.
00:40:22
Its arms and legs were strewn across the floor.
00:40:25
They had been removed and tossed aside.
00:40:29
The butcher turned to face my.
00:40:32
I guess my accountant here has ripped me off for the last time.
00:40:37
He's sad with a sadistic chuckle.
00:40:40
Only fair I got to rip him apart, don't you think?
00:40:44
Indeed it is, my good friend.
00:40:48
Mike twisted around to see Mr.
00:40:50
Elliot had reappeared at the door.
00:40:53
Let me introduce you to my new junior associate, Mr.
00:40:56
Featherstone.
00:40:57
He'll be performing clean-up duties this evening.
00:41:01
Good luck with that, yet.
00:41:04
The butcher then slowly exhaled.
00:41:06
Step back from the remains of the corpse and started to make his way out of the room.
00:41:11
I'll make sure you do the job right.
00:41:14
I don't want a single trace of this piece of shit remaining when you're done.
00:41:18
Well, that is how our guarantee is always.
00:41:22
Mr.
00:41:22
Elliot then stepped aside to allow this murdering psychopath to exit the room, leaving Mike to survey the whole devastating scene.
00:41:31
I'll make sure you get this place spotless.
00:41:34
Take as much time as you need.
00:41:36
Elliot said, now directly facing Mike.
00:41:40
But I want this place so clean that you'd be able to each or next meal of the floor in here.
00:41:45
I'll be back in a couple of hours to see how you're getting on.
00:41:49
He then pointed to a mop and bucket in the corner, as well as a bunch of cleaning supplies.
00:41:54
He then ignited the incinerator, randomly picking up a limb and tossing it inside, before once again leaving the room.
00:42:06
OK then, Michael.
00:42:08
As I'm sure you can imagine, times are tough for all major multinational corporations, and the same goes for the fast food industry.
00:42:16
Well, we'd love to have you on board, but we'd have to start you on a zero hours contract.
00:42:20
My name won't waste a start, of course.
00:42:23
Well, I'm pretty sure you'd be guaranteed at least eight to twelve hours of work every week, maybe even more.
00:42:28
After two or three years, you'll almost certainly be in line for a full-time position.
00:42:32
So, what do you say?
00:42:35
Are you excited to join the bandit burgundy?
00:42:38
Well, who wouldn't be?
00:42:41
It was all that Mike could say in response.
00:42:44
Great.
00:42:45
Then we'll see you first thing tomorrow so you can pick up your new work clothes.
00:42:49
Oh, sorry to say you'll be expected to buy them from the company, but you should earn enough in the first week or so to cover the car.
00:42:57
Mike offered the weakest of smiles in response.
00:43:02
The following day, Mike resigned to his fate, not on the office door.
00:43:08
Huh?
00:43:09
There you are.
00:43:10
So lovely to see you again.
00:43:13
Mike had to chuckle at the absurdity of the situation.
00:43:17
Yep.
00:43:18
Glad to be back.
00:43:20
Raring to go, I assume.
00:43:23
Mike hesitantly replied to this with a question.
00:43:26
I'm...
00:43:27
can I be honest with you?
00:43:29
Why, of course.
00:43:31
I'm just really happy to have a job.
00:43:34
Absolutely no harm in that at all.
00:43:37
We're glad to have you on board and fully committed.
00:43:40
So, Mr.
00:43:40
Featherstone, let's get you fitted up with a bespoke hazmat suit, shall we?
00:43:46
That was the job offer, as written by Darius McCorkendale, and narrated by Dr.
00:43:58
Creepin.
00:44:00
Now, as promised, here's a little more about the upcoming collaboration between Dr.
00:44:04
Creepin and Chilling Tales for Dark Knights.
00:44:08
Tomorrow, Dr.
00:44:09
Creepin will debut his frightening narration of our creator Craig Groeschik's "Stay in Your Car" on his channel.
00:44:18
This tale follows a man stranded on a lonely desert highway, or strange creatures lurk in the shadows, and survival depends on obeying one simple rule.
00:44:29
Stay in your car.
00:44:32
But when desperation forces him to break that rule, all hell breaks loose.
00:44:38
You won't want to miss it.
00:44:40
Thanks Jeff.
00:44:42
Listen as I'd love you to check out my performance of Craig's story tomorrow.
00:44:47
You'll find it on YouTube at Dr.
00:44:48
Creepin's wall.
00:44:50
Please check it out and let me know what you think.
00:44:53
And should you stop by, don't forget to like and comment on the video, and be sure to tell me that Chilling Tales sends you.
00:45:00
Your support means the world to all of us.
00:45:03
That it does.
00:45:05
I know our audience is gonna love it.
00:45:08
But that's enough suspense for now.
00:45:10
Let's keep the chills coming.
00:45:13
Our next tale promises to deliver a unique and terrifying perspective.
00:45:18
It will stay with you long after the final word.
00:45:21
Absolutely Jeff.
00:45:23
Our final offering comes to us once again from the twisted mind of Darius McCorkenday.
00:45:29
In this chilling encounter, stormy nights are weary traveller and a vending machine converged in a horrifying symphony that will leave you questioning the nature of inanimate objects, and your own sanity.
00:45:41
Without further ado, I present to you tonight's thrilling finale.
00:45:45
Welcome to the machine.
00:45:49
As the night unfolded beneath a dense quilt of snow, its weight palpable in the air, Tom skillfully guided his car through the perilous twists of the mountain run.
00:46:01
The tyres grappling with the icy surface, emitted a rhythmic crunch that harmonized with the haunting stillness of the snow-blanketed landscape.
00:46:10
Each snowflake, a frigid dagger mercilessly assaulting the windshield, leading fleeting imprints like a bunch of ephemeral crystal.
00:46:19
Tom, a seasoned man in his late 40s, confronted the wintry onslaught with his typical unwavering result.
00:46:27
His hands, weathered and worn, clamped under the steering wheel with a ferocious intensity, fingers pressed into the cold leather.
00:46:35
Through the storm's relentless assault, he squinted, his eyes etched with determination, navigating the path with a focus that bordered on steedy concentration.
00:46:46
The luminous glow of the car's headlights fought against the darkness, revealing only the immediate terrain in its feeble attempt to pierce the snow-laden night.
00:46:55
Despite the treacherous conditions, Tom laid into his car in typical fashion.
00:47:01
Come on, ya piece of shit.
00:47:03
Don't let me down now.
00:47:05
I never trusted you to give me anywhere.
00:47:08
I'm trading you in as soon as I get the chance, you heap of junk.
00:47:13
Within the confines of the car, Tom's hand fumbled blindly in the frosty air, seeking the solace of his phone.
00:47:20
His fingers, nimble but weathered, danced across the smooth screen with practice familiarity, a choreography of muscle memory.
00:47:29
The dim glow from the phone's display painted fleeting shadows on his strained face as he dialed.
00:47:36
In those ha stopping moments, it felt as though each second was stretching on endlessly, each fraught with the anticipation of the connection.
00:47:45
The rhythmic pulsing of the dial-term echoed in the confine space, amplifying the air of tension.
00:47:52
Finally, a triumphant shine resonated through the car's cabin.
00:47:56
The call had connected.
00:47:58
A sigh of relief escaped Tom's lits, dissipating like a visible breath in the cold, tight confines of the car.
00:48:07
Francis, oh, yeah, flight was delayed.
00:48:11
I know, I know.
00:48:13
Just then his eyes caught sight of a sign looming in the distance.
00:48:17
Rest stop.
00:48:20
Listen, Francis.
00:48:22
I can hardly see anything in this storm.
00:48:24
Gonna get off the road and wait it out for a bit.
00:48:26
With any luck, she'd be home around midnight.
00:48:29
Francis, hello?
00:48:32
He glanced back at his phone, which displayed the unwelcome message call disconnected.
00:48:40
Crap.
00:48:41
God damn phone letting me down again.
00:48:44
First this heap of junk on four wheels, now my stupid cell phone.
00:48:48
He's everything out to get me tonight.
00:48:51
The air of frustration was evident in the deep lines etched across Tom's face, painting an image of worried discontent as he forcefully tossed the uncooperative phone onto the passenger seat.
00:49:03
Now even the phone was against him.
00:49:06
He felt as though his hand was somehow being purposefully forced, something nudging him toward the refuge the rest stopped sign had promised.
00:49:14
With a deliberate, it cautious turn of the steering wheel.
00:49:17
The car responded.
00:49:19
Its tires engaging with the icy surface, causing the vehicle to elegantly slide towards the beckoning entrance to his temporary salvation.
00:49:28
At least you managed to get me off the road in one piece your useless old rust bucket.
00:49:33
The exterior of the rest stop came into view, revealing a narrow lane that wound its way into a desolate, empty parking lot.
00:49:41
Beneath the glow of a solitary street lamp, modest concrete structure emerged.
00:49:46
Its detail is still shrouded by the relentless fall of accumulating snow.
00:49:51
The faint outlines of a few picnic tables manifested in the rear, mere silhouettes against the wintry backdrop.
00:49:59
Tom's car glided gracefully into one of the empty parking spaces, coming to arrest in complete tranquility, not even a single other vehicle was to be seen.
00:50:09
As he emerged from the old rust bucket, he was greeted by a biting wind that sent shivers throughout his frame.
00:50:16
Undeterred, he trudged through the gusts of icy air, each step accompanied by the crunch of snow beneath his boots.
00:50:24
There made his way decisively towards the intriguing concrete structure, standing resolute against the wintry landscape.
00:50:33
Tom hastily entered the building, making a beeline for the urinal.
00:50:38
Unzipping his fly, he sighed in relief as he emptied two hours worth of soda.
00:50:44
As the relief came, he started to take in his surroundings.
00:50:48
Inside the restroom, the scene was one of mundane neglect.
00:50:52
Ugly, bland decor had dawned the walls, as she'd have rusted metal served as a mirror, and broken tiles hinted at the extended passage of time since this place had seen its heyday,
00:51:03
probably 50 years previously.
00:51:06
Tom caught his reflection in the mirror.
00:51:09
It offered him a two-perfect perspective on his current situation.
00:51:14
God damn it.
00:51:16
The biting shell of the night egg clung to him, as he hastily zipped up his fly, returning from the restroom to the comparative grandeur of the exterior of the barren rest stop.
00:51:28
In the dim glow, distant flickering light back in dimmed would a secluded alcove at the end of the building.
00:51:35
In the shadows the alcove bloomed a battered old vending machine, a relic of riveted steel that seemed to have just barely weathered the passage of countless years.
00:51:45
And firmly to the concrete floor, it's two light bulbs, one broken and flickering, scarcely illuminated the interior.
00:51:53
A rusty coin slot emitted a pulsating blue light that seemed almost too inviting.
00:51:59
Tom surveyed its offerings, trays filled with nondescript soda cans and candy bars, each wrapped in no frills packaging.
00:52:08
A haunting logo adorned each snack, a creepy clown face with hypnotic eyes sealed by an oversized top hat.
00:52:16
Below were the name and slogan, a twun spink of candy company.
00:52:21
We told you what to dream.
00:52:25
Suddenly a metallic clank echoed through the empty parking lot as the wind whimsically tossed an empty soda can beneath Tom's car.
00:52:33
Hmm, strange that it would happen at precisely that moment.
00:52:37
He also thought he heard the engine of his car rumble in response to the soda can, but that was just plain impossible, he used.
00:52:44
So he gave it no more thought.
00:52:46
Tom then quickly turned his attention back to the vending machine, producing a handful of change from his pocket and feeding three quarters into the coin slot.
00:52:55
With a few button presses, the machine roared to light.
00:53:00
With thick metal spiral coil inside, began its grinding motion, pushing a bag of mad cap jelly beans gradually toward the eagerly expectant tom.
00:53:10
As he watched with gathering anticipation, the coil creaked to an abrupt halt, leaving the candy precariously dangling on the edge.
00:53:19
Oh, come on, don't say you hate me too.
00:53:24
His frustration now palpable, Tom thumped the side of the machine, slapped the glass front, and resorted to a swift kick to the bottom.
00:53:33
Truth be known, he'd always hated people who did this, seeing as it mostly happened when they were trying to get something without pay.
00:53:40
He'd secretly hoped that the vending machine guards were looking down on such assholes, waiting for the opportunity to exact their revenge.
00:53:48
On this occasion though, and in these circumstances, he felt justified.
00:53:53
He had put the money in the slot after all.
00:53:56
Spiral coil reluctantly resumed its rotation.
00:54:01
Oh yeah!
00:54:03
The candy leisurely inched its way forward, only for him to be thwarted once more.
00:54:09
The blue light around the coin slot pulsated, as if it were mocking him.
00:54:13
Tom's gaze then fell upon a small white sign taped to the side of the machine.
00:54:18
Flipping it over, he read the crude words scrawled in black pen.
00:54:22
"You said own risk."
00:54:25
"Ah, just wonderful," he thought.
00:54:30
Remembering his sense of unease being all alone in the rest of it, he cautiously surveyed his surroundings for any crying eyes.
00:54:38
Saddest fired that he was indeed isolated from the rest of civilization, he embarked on his covert mission.
00:54:45
Slyly hissed his hand into the vending machine's collection slot.
00:54:49
The clandestine maneuver aimed at securing his elusive snap.
00:54:53
Nealing on the unforgiving cold ground, he extended his arm with determination.
00:54:59
The chill of the snow seeping through his pants as his fingers delved into the machine's intricate inner workings.
00:55:05
The struggle unfolded like a silent dance.
00:55:08
The movement of Tom's arm navigating the labyrinthine coils and trays within the machine.
00:55:14
Amidst this delicate operation, his hand brushed against an unexpected sharp edge, prompting an involuntary wince of discomfort.
00:55:23
A sharp cry, merging frustration with a tinge of pain, escaped Tom's lips as he swiftly withdrew his hand, fingers instinctively clutching at the affected spot.
00:55:34
Undeterred, Tom gritted his teeth and rubbed the small cuts with the thumb of his other hand.
00:55:40
He brought the injured appendage to his lips, sucking on it in a resolute refusal to let the momentary setback conquer his strength of purpose.
00:55:49
With hastily determination, he redded himself for another attempt, placing his arm once again into the vending machine.
00:55:56
This time his movements were more cautious and he adjusted his angle of entry, determined to overcome the vending machine's mysterious defenses.
00:56:06
His hand reached upward, fingers stretched to their physical limits, nearly grasping the brine.
00:56:13
Tom's face reflected a blend of pain and concentration, his willpower urging the coveted snack into his possession.
00:56:20
Oh yeah, come to daddy, that's it, you got it?
00:56:25
Almost there.
00:56:29
Surge of frustration accompanied an ominous tearing sound, as a sleeve of Tom's shirt caught on the edge of the spiral coil below his candy, ripping right through it.
00:56:40
Oh shit.
00:56:43
In a panic-in-juice frenzy, Tom yanked his arm back, a sudden desperation etched across his face.
00:56:51
Yet the sleeve of his shirt tenaciously clung to his limb, forcing an inescapable shackle that trapped his arm inside.
00:56:59
Each frantic target merely served to inflict futile incremental damage, tearing the fabric of his shirt and embedding the coil even more deeply.
00:57:08
Despite vigorous attempts, flagping his arm pulling from side to side, the entanglement persisted, refusing to yield its grip.
00:57:18
Taking a measured breath amidst the unfolding chaos, Tom's gaze shifted upward toward the coin slot.
00:57:25
A moment of considered contemplation ensued, as he retrieved a handful of change from his pocket, thumb assorting the coins with meticulous precision.
00:57:35
Three quarters were chosen for the mission, or the decisive flick they found their place within the slot, the remaining coins returned to the sanctuary of his pocket.
00:57:46
Transforming into a contortionist through sheer necessity, Tom adjusted his position with strained fortitude.
00:57:53
His arm, now a reluctant participant in this perplexing dance, extended toward the coin slot.
00:58:00
The three quarters made their hasty descent, buttons repressed, and the vending machine responded with a cacophony of rattles as it sprang back to life.
00:58:09
The spiral coil, once a relentless adversary, begrudgingly acquiesced, slowly grinding forward to the point of almost liberating the fabric from Tom's beleaguered sleeve.
00:58:21
Oh yes, Tom shouted into the cold night air.
00:58:26
His triumph was short lived though.
00:58:29
The machine shuddered, the coil grinding to a halt before rotating backward.
00:58:34
Panic flashed in Tom's eyes.
00:58:37
No, no.
00:58:41
With a malevolent persistence, the spiral coil mercilessly tightened his grip on Tom's sleeve, methodically winding more fabric around it with each ominous turn.
00:58:52
The guttural scream of agony than erupted from his throat as his body contorted in tandem with the rotation until crack.
00:59:01
Panic surged through Tom's entire being as his wrist snapped, sharp cry escaping from his lips.
00:59:09
However, the coil indifferent to his pain and mechanically devoid of empathy persisted in its relentless rotation.
00:59:18
Another excruciating well-followed as his elbow splintered under the merciless pressure.
00:59:25
A oblivious to Tom's anguished ordeal, the coil continued its relentless grind, unyielding in its mission to put him deeper into the mechanical jaws of the vending machine.
00:59:36
Tears streamed down Tom's cheek, his face pressed against the unforgiving glass, silent witness to his arms inexorable descent into the metallic abyss.
00:59:48
Finally, with an abrupt cessation, the spiral coil ground to a halt.
00:59:54
The vending machine shuddered and vibrated as it surrendered to a powered down state, and Tom, overwhelmed by the cocktail of pain and exhaustion, succumbed to unconsciousness.
01:00:07
In a cruel twist of fate as if mocking his torment, the bag of mad cap jelly beans finally emancipated itself from the clutches of the machine and dropped into the collection slot.
01:00:19
Tom lay curled on his side, thin blanket of snow already embracing his form.
01:00:24
His arm was twisted within the machine's intricate coil.
01:00:30
A distant phone ring pierced the quiet night, prompting Tom's snow-covered eyelids to flicker open, shivering he cast a gaze towards his car.
01:00:40
Inside the vehicle, Tom's phone illuminated, revealing a profile picture of Francis and Tom in a tender embrace.
01:00:48
"Well, if that's you, Francis, please report me missing or something."
01:00:55
The ringing then ceased, replaced by a notification on the screen.
01:01:00
"Hey, babe.
01:01:01
Can't wait up any longer.
01:01:03
Hope you're okay.
01:01:04
Be nice to the car, and I'm sure it'll bring you home safe."
01:01:08
"See you in the morning.
01:01:09
Love you."
01:01:11
His body now weak and bitterly cold.
01:01:14
Tom turned back to the vending machine, his eyes catching sight of something beneath it, a large glass jar with a piece of paper inside.
01:01:24
Tom shifted onto his back, each movement accompanied by searing pain.
01:01:29
Using his free arm, he reached under the machine, eventually rolling the bottles towards him with his fingertips.
01:01:36
But then, he froze in horror.
01:01:40
The machine's power cord lay on the ground, unplugged.
01:01:46
"What the hell?"
01:01:50
Looking up at the machine with newfound curiosity, Tom muttered to himself, "That, that's not possible."
01:01:59
He retrieved the jar, smashed it, and shook the paper free.
01:02:04
On it was written a series of cryptic words, "Welcome, my son.
01:02:10
Welcome to the machine."
01:02:13
Scrutinizing his hand, Tom observed the vice-like grip it now maintained around a long shard of glass, a fragment revealed to be a sharp as any honed blade.
01:02:24
Faced with the stark absence of alternatives, he swiftly found himself compelled to employ this improvised tool.
01:02:32
He pressed the glass tip coldly against his shoulder, and makeshift surgical blade poised to breeze the fabric that clung to his skin.
01:02:41
In the throes of uncontrollable tremors, Tom hesitated, his breath betraying the gravity of the impending decision.
01:02:49
Gritting his teeth with a determination that teeted on the brink of surrender, he closed his eyes.
01:02:56
The internal struggle played out across the contours of his face as he battled with the unthinkable.
01:03:03
With a tremor in his voice, Tom spoke into the desolate emptiness of his surroundings.
01:03:08
His words appoint him plea to force his beyond his comprehension.
01:03:14
"Look, I've never been warned to put my faith in God.
01:03:18
And perhaps, just perhaps, that skepticism has led me to this juncture.
01:03:23
But hear me out, please.
01:03:25
Release me from this ordeal.
01:03:27
And I placed him back in a more virtuous path from now on.
01:03:31
Her friends always told me to be kind to machines.
01:03:34
She says there's more to him than buttons and wires.
01:03:38
Never thought too much about it.
01:03:40
It was just so easy to see the bad side and blame my car and my phone and rear the gadget when they didn't make everything alright.
01:03:47
But, you know, in the grand scheme of things I've always believed there's more to gadgets and the like, as if they really could possess the semblance of a soul.
01:03:56
So, here I am, reaching out.
01:04:00
Grab me a sign, the smallest indication that you're contemplating a second chance for me.
01:04:05
I swear with every fiber of my being, I won't falter.
01:04:08
I won't let you down.
01:04:10
You don't know who I am or where I've been.
01:04:13
Let this moment be a turning point in the narrative of my existence.
01:04:17
Then, with a hint of desperation.
01:04:21
So, what do you say, huh?
01:04:25
Nothing.
01:04:29
Silent.
01:04:31
Profound suffocating silence envelop the air.
01:04:35
It's oppressive weight settling upon the desolate scene.
01:04:39
During this hushed stillness, Tom's quiet sob is resonated.
01:04:43
A heart-rending accompaniment to the solitude that surrounded him.
01:04:48
As he lowered his head, the sob on us of despair clung to him, casting an impenetrable shadow over his being.
01:04:56
The outcome, it seemed, was already irrevocably sealed.
01:05:00
Yet as if the fabric of destiny had intervened, the vending machine stirred once more.
01:05:07
It awakened with an unsettling shadow and a discordant rattle.
01:05:12
The balls were then morphing into an ominous, deep red glow.
01:05:16
Mechanical symphony ensued, resonating with the orchestrated movement of gears and pistons.
01:05:23
The machine seemingly supercharging before Tom's disbelieving eye.
01:05:28
And then, the machine spoke.
01:05:32
It's alright.
01:05:34
We know where you've been.
01:05:38
In that moment fear seized him.
01:05:40
His eyes snapping open as the coil once more initiated its malevolent rotation, grinding backward once more.
01:05:48
The air resonated with a sickening snap, an audible demonstration of the inexorable surrender of Tom's arm to the relentless machinations of the vending machine.
01:06:00
Oh, Jesus Christ.
01:06:04
The horrified shriek escaped him, as he was inexorably pulled further into the collection slot.
01:06:10
Now up to his head, the machine seemingly devouring him alive.
01:06:17
The sheet metal around the slot groaned and buckled, bending inward to accommodate Tom's head.
01:06:24
Desperately he kicked his legs, gripped the slot with his free hand, pushing and resisting.
01:06:30
But his feeble efforts were in vain.
01:06:33
Weakened and helpless, Tom's head was swallowed by the vending machine in an instant.
01:06:40
Inside the machine, Tom's bones echoed as the coil shuddered to a stop.
01:06:45
He caught his breath, only for the top rose coil to start running, turning, grinding and pushing a can of soda forward.
01:06:54
Tom's eyes widened even further as the soda can tumbled over the edge, landing squarely on the bridge of his nose with a sickening crunch.
01:07:02
Blood sprayed from Tom's nostrils, splattering over a tray of interstellar moonpies.
01:07:09
A bulb exploded, sharing fragmented glass onto Tom's face.
01:07:14
His screams was drowned out by a hissing sound emanating from the machine's depths.
01:07:19
Frantically, his eyes searched for the source.
01:07:23
A hose had broken free, spraying pneumatic fluid everywhere on the walls, the snacks and directly into Tom's eyes and face.
01:07:32
It burned instantly, and Tom's scream does his face vanished beneath an acidic hay.
01:07:40
The machine spoke once more.
01:07:43
"Welcome, my son.
01:07:46
Welcome to the machine."
01:07:49
Outside blood splattered from the collection slot, standing the pristine snow red, rattled like a giant meagreinder, the noise almost joyous.
01:08:01
The only sounds that lingered were Tom's muffled screams as his body was slowly but surely consumed by the relentless appetite for the all-consuming machine.
01:08:15
That was "Welcome to the Machine," as written by Darius McCorkendale, and brought to life by Dr.
01:08:22
Creepin.
01:08:23
"What a night of haunting tales."
01:08:25
"Dr.
01:08:25
Creepin, it's been incredible having you join us."
01:08:29
Before we wrap things up this evening, I think our listeners, some of whom may be listening to you for the first time, would love to know more about what you think makes your work so compelling.
01:08:40
"Thank you, Jeff.
01:08:41
My voice is often described as a blend of soothing calm and creeping dread.
01:08:47
Something that draws listeners into a world where reality blurs and every shadow seems alive.
01:08:53
I truly believe storytelling is humanity's most ancient emperor found out, a thread connecting the living with the departed.
01:09:00
For me, it's more than just a pastime.
01:09:03
It's a calling, even a ritual, and perhaps an effort to...
01:09:07
...a tone for secrets best left buried.
01:09:12
I'll leave that up to your listeners to interpret."
