41 - Paterfamilias & Understanding the Cultural Context of the Household Codes
Description
Context matters. Knowing the culture and history of the time period of Paul's letters allows us to see things we wouldn't be able to see otherwise. It allows us to get into the heads of Paul's audience a bit. And, for me at least, it allows us to see why the household codes were revolutionary in a completely different way than we would expect in today's culture. I think a good place to start is with understanding the paterfamilias, the male heads of household who had control in a way we don't recognize today (thank God).
