Description

Symbol of holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, Pumpkins, which are technically a fruit, not a vegetable, are one of the oldest domesticated plants in the world and have been used for centuries in various ways. Gourds and pumpkins are closely related fruits from the Cucurbitaceae (cucumber) family, but they are generally distinguished by their intended use: gourds are primarily for decoration due to their hard shells and sometimes bitter taste, while pumpkins are a type of squash often grown for eating or carving. All pumpkins are a type of squash and are technically gourds, but not all gourds are pumpkins.
