620 Enhancing Surgical Outcomes: The Vital Work of RNFAs – Anna
Update: 2024-11-18
Description
In this podcast, Enhancing Surgical Outcomes: The Vital Work of RNFAs, we investigate an area of nursing that you may not know about: the registered nurse first assistant, or RNFA. You will find this practitioner in the operating room assisting the surgeon. Anna Gray, who serves in this role, is here to explain what it involves.
This is a position that requires years of training and passing a difficult examination. It’s an expanded set of nursing skills that involves both knowledge of the dynamics of an OR and a deep understanding of surgical processes.
And that’s not all. Communication skills assume paramount importance in this position. The RNFA must coordinate the flow of work and appropriately delegate tasks so that surgeons have everything they need to successfully perform the operation. It might be considered a high-level version of directing traffic in order to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
Having RNFAs working in an OR is frankly more cost-effective than having another surgeon as first assist, and both surgeons and hospitals have embraced having these highly-qualified nurses in the OR.
For LNCs, though, the RNFA’s role is problematic, since it’s not required to be documented. This will prove frustrating to LNCs, as they often need to figure out, when an operation goes wrong, why it happened. OR notes may not even record that the RNFA was present.
Anna says she relies on the operating room nurse to record her presence, but LNCs may also want to dig down to discover if an RFNA was working in the OR.
Here's What to Expect from the Podcast: Enhancing Surgical Outcomes: The Vital Work of RNFAs
What is an RNFA?
What education and training does it require?
How has having an RNFA available in a hospital become a selling point?
What questions should an LNC ask about how the RNFA functioned in an operating room scenario?
How can an LNC deal with lack of requirements for an RNFA to keep records of what goes on in an OR?
