70. Beth Rodden - Managing Fear In The Darkest Moments
Description
Beth Rodden is one of the best female rock climbers of all-time, and a globally recognized ambassador for the outdoor community. She has achieved a number of notable free climbs on El Capitan, the 3,000-foot monolith in Yosemite National Park, and has also established the hardest first ascent on a crack climb ever done by a woman. In 2000, Beth made international news when she and three male companions were taken hostage while climbing in Kyrgyzstan.
In this episode, Beth discusses:
- Her pathway into the sport and how she became a sponsored climber;
- How she manages and navigates fear;
- The lack of female representation in the sport, along with the pay inequity women face;
- Advice for how to negotiate for pay equity;
- Her harrowing experience being kidnapped;
- Her healing process after being released and how she held onto hope in the face of uncertainty;
- The fears she faced ahead of motherhood, how she navigated them, and the beauty that followed once she became a mother.
