Markus Stöckl is a former downhill mountain bike racer and multiple world speed record holder—both on dirt and snow, also the first man to complete a run of the infamous Streif in Kitsbuhel on two wheels, he is also the owner of the MS Racing Team.
If you think Markus has retired from crazy projects and chasing speed records, you would be betting on the wrong guy.
During this conversation, you’ll hear him struggling with a heavy cough—not from catching a cold on the couch, but because, at the time of recording, he had just returned from an expedition near Everest Base Camp at 6,700 meters where he believes the thin air allows higher speeds on a bike.
Some of Markus’s projects—like riding down the Streif—became some of the most-viewed Red Bull videos of all time and it might give the impression that he spends most of his time working on such projects but he’s not.
For Markus, mountain biking is a good hobby and there’s much more to his life beyond those headline stunts, and in this conversation, you’ll get to discover those hidden sides too.
I’ve had the chance to catch Markus during the downhill world cup round in Loudenvielle and in this conversation, expect to hear about:
* How he became one of the very first Red Bull athletes in the brand’s history—and why he’s still with them today.
* How he began his journey into speed records, what it took him to reach 210 kph on snow, 167 kph on dirt and why he chose to do those records on production bikes
* Some very intriguing details about his recent expedition at the Everest base camp
* The wild story of riding down the Streif with 1.5 cm spikes on his tires.
* Why he launched his team that became one of the most successful teams on the circuit.
* Why he believes gearboxes are the future of downhill racing.
* His unspectected life out of the bike* And much more.
