3:05 pm- On Sunday night, eight Senators who caucus with Democrats—Angus King, Tim Kaine, Dick Durbin, John Fetterman, Maggie Hassan, Jeanne Shaheen, and Catherine Cortez Masto—joined Republicans and agreed to advance a bill that would end the government shutdown. The final vote in the Senate is expected to take place on Monday with a vote in the House of Representatives coming later in the week. If passed, the plan would fund most federal agencies through January 30th. Were Democrats simply prolonging the shutdown in hopes that it would help them electorally last Tuesday?
3:20 pm- The United States Supreme Court has denied a request to revisit Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark decision legalizing same-sex marriage in 2015. The court did not comment on its decision to decline the petition. According to The New York Times, at least four justices would have to vote in favor of hearing the case.
3:40 pm- Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) was asked why he suddenly decided to join Republicans to end the government shutdown. He responded: "I was so focused on the Virginia elections I wasn't in this discussion on healthcare to see how dug in they were."
