In 2008, he was put into a medically induced coma after falling gravely ill with acute bacterial meningoencephalitis, which has a 90% mortality rate. What happened from there is against all odds. His neocortex was so damaged he should not have been dreaming or having any type of dream-like experience, yet he had an NDE.
