A combination of strategies help determine best cancer treatment strategies, Elizabeth Tracey reports

Description
Genetics are foundational to much of cancer treatment, and now both the environment surrounding the tumor as well as analysis of cancer cells shed into the blood may also be used to inform treatment as well. That’s according to studies by Valsamo Anagnostou, a cancer researcher at Johns Hopkins, and colleagues.
Anangostou: In addition to these characteristics either in the genetic makeup of the cancer or the phenotype if you will of the tumor microenvironment one would actually can pick up traces of cancer in the circulation in peripheral blood. We developed a phase three clinical trial we're practically we make the decision who will get immunotherapy and who needs immunotherapy and chemotherapy based on this molecular readout. :29
Anangostou says cancer cells in the peripheral blood also provide an easily accessible means to sample how the cancer is changing over time, an important determinant of ongoing therapy. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
