In this episode of The Daryl Perry Podcast, Daryl talks openly about what it feels like to go through life numb. Not happy, not sad, not energized, not connected. Just floating. He explains how this happens slowly over time, from past hurt, from stressful routines, from always being on, and from the constant distractions we surround ourselves with to avoid actually feeling anything.
Daryl walks through how emotional shutdown is a survival mode that a lot of people are in right now. You convince yourself you are functioning, you keep it surface level with most people, you keep scrolling, you keep moving, but you are not really connected to yourself or anybody else. He talks about why that becomes dangerous long term, because when you turn off the painful stuff you also turn off the good stuff. The warmth. The joy. The love. The pride. The calm.
This conversation is about starting to wake back up. Daryl shares some first steps to reconnect. Slowing down. Having real conversations instead of constant distraction. Meeting up with people in person when you can. Getting outside without a screen for a few quiet minutes and actually sitting with yourself. Letting yourself feel anger and grief when something hurts, instead of shutting it down. Letting yourself feel excitement and care when something good shows up, instead of playing it cool.
You will also hear him stress how helpful therapy can be for untangling why you disconnected in the first place and how you personally can start to move forward. Everyone’s story is different. Everyone’s way back is different. But nobody is meant to live their entire life numb.
This is a very real talk about what it means to stop just getting through the day and start actually living again.
