Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has secured a fourth term with 89.77% of the vote, according to provisional results announced yesterdayy, following an election marked by historically low turnout and the exclusion of his main political rivals.

 

2.    Cameroon – Yaounde 

Cameroon’s Paul Biya declared winner of presidential election amid deadly protests

Cameroon’s Constitutional Council yesterday declared long-serving President Paul Biya the winner of the country’s October 12 presidential election, extending his rule that has spanned more than four decades.

4.In our historical archives, it was on this day 28 October 1961 when Walter Sisulu, Lilian Ngoyi and Alfred Nzo were arrested for attending a social party covertly. They were charged with contravening section 9(1) of Act 44 of 1950. 

The case was later withdrawn because there was no sufficient evidence provided to prove that the party was in fact a meeting.
