Description

Episode 5.6

In the 1800s, York County grew up as a community. The county provided an almshouse and hospital for children, poor people and disabled adults. The Ladies Aid Society supported soldiers and the York County community in the Civil War. York Hospital formed to host patients needing overnight care. The Children’s Home of York formed as an orphanage to care for families disrupted by the deadly Civil War. A new county prison went up, a place designed to keep the county safe. Most of these organizations - pillars of compassion or places to keep people or the community safe - operate today to help form, reform, and enhance the community in York County.
