An interview with Kristin Schwarz and Shaan Gandhi
Update: 2013-05-05
Description
On Monday April 21, approximately 36,000 runners participated in the historic 118th Boston Marathon, just over a year after the event on Boston’s Patriots Day was marred by a horrific terrorist attack. Shortly after the tragic bombing in 2013, which killed three people and wounded more than 260 others, Radio Rounds host and current resident physician Lakshman Swamy spoke with then-third year medical students Kristin Schwarz (Boston University) and Shaan Gandhi (Harvard University). Kristin and Shaan were at Boston Hospitals on their surgery rotations on the now-infamous Marathon Monday, and they had the opportunity to care for the victims from the tragic marathon bombing that took place on Monday, April 15, 2013. In this memorable special report, Kristin and Shaan share their experiences and describe how the incident impacted their growth as physicians. One year later, we respectfully re-share this episode on the anniversary of a day in Boston that has been remembered not for the attack itself but by the resilience of first-responders, of the marathoners, and of the city as whole. Kristin and Shaan are two of many Bostonians who over the past year have personified the mantra, ‘Boston Strong.’This episode airs in memory of Krystle Campbell, 29; Lu Lingzi, 23; and Martin Richard, 8, who were killed in the 2013 bombing.
