Arsonist Sentenced for 1998 Murder of Teen
Update: 2025-12-23
Description
Gregory John Walker, a fifty-eight-year-old man in Australia, was sentenced to jail for a 1998 arson attack that killed a thirteen-year-old boy. Walker, who was on parole at the time, threw a Molotov cocktail into a house during a neighborhood dispute, trapping Arthur Haines on the top floor. Arthur died eleven weeks later. Walker was sentenced to a maximum of ten years and nine months for manslaughter, despite his recent remorse and efforts to make amends. Arthurs mother, Julie Szabo, has carried deep guilt for letting him have his first sleepover and fought publicly to keep the case alive. Walker becomes eligible for parole in February 2029, but the judge acknowledged that nothing can undo the pain for Arthurs family and community.
