Artbox Empowers Artists with Disabilities
Update: 2025-12-08
Description
Artbox, founded in 2011 by Madeline Alterman, supports artists with learning disabilities and autism, providing studio space, materials, and tuition. With over ninety artists weekly, the organization has seen works exhibited, commissioned, and sold, including Shrutis advent calendar for Lush and Seattons album cover for CMAT. Altermans personal experiences inspired her to create a supportive environment, as seen in the vibrant studio where artists like Seeta and Violet thrive. Artbox empowers artists to lead workshops, raising funds and building confidence, as seen when an artist with Downs syndrome led a workshop at a former patient facility.
