Description

I can't wait for you to hear from our guest today. Heijin Lee is Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University who specializes in Asian-American studies. She is currently working on her forthcoming book,The Geopolitics of Beauty, which maps the convergence of pop culture and plastic surgery coming from South Korea and has been featured on National Public Radio's Code Switch, Korea Society's "K-Pop 101" series, and at KCON discussing beauty, pop and power.

Being Asian-Americans, Heijin and I have had many similar experiences in life. We are both passionate about starting a dialogue in regards to where Asian-Americans fit into the conversation of racism. Today we're going into a deep dive about both the concern we have for our children and our country's future, but also the pride we have in the younger generation of being powerful advocates for minorities.

On today's episode, Heijin and I discuss:

  • The different meanings that Korean beauty takes on
  • How the standard of beauty in our culture is changing
  • Social media's influence of taking Korean culture products to a new level
  • The model minority myth and where it stems from
  • How to talk to our children about race
