Atheists on Air: Beyond the Trailer Park Ep, 165: Mormon or Not Mormon, That's the Question!
Update: 2018-08-28
Description
This week, Bryce Blankenagel joins us to talk about the Mormon church’s current identity crisis. Specifically, what's with the want to be called "The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" and NOT Mormons.
While a bizarre issue, its actually one fraught with a we bit of history,,,
The church has had a complicated relationship with the term Mormon since its restoration
in 1830. Church leaders long chafed at antagonists calling them Mormons and, early on,
Mormonites, but in recent decades they have been more accepting of the nickname.
Joseph Smith received the full name of the church by revelation in 1838. Before that, it
had gone by the Church of Jesus Christ and, from 1834-38, the Church of the Latter-day
Saints.
As the new guidelines state, "the term "Mormonism" is inaccurate and should not be used,,,"
But why? Hopefully Bryce will be able to answer our query.
