AustinUp Event May 14, 2020

Have a listen to our AustinUp event “Startups After 50” based on our book Next For Me: A Guide To Startups For Dreamers. The discussion happened on May 14, 2020 as we were all in some form of quarantine due to Covid-19.

Highlights:

  • There’s a lot of insecurity and stress around employment, now more so than ever. We were hearing that pre-pandemic and now we’re hearing it much, much more. We’re also seeing that particularly in a certain age group, people are really disengaged based on the rate of change that things are happening, new technologies, excessive scrutiny, skills gaps, etc. So we really wanted to address that and get people more comfortable with change and opportunity.

  • You hear every day people saying that by slowing down, I have taken some time to take a look at how I’ve been living my life. You move so fast through the course of your life that you don’t take that time. So with a definition of your values and guiding principles in place then you can start having some fun when you’re thinking about if you want to start a company or if you’re going to make a career change.

  • Q: If you’re an entrepreneur or thinking about an entrepreneurial idea, and it’s solo. What’s your experience when it’s a team? Pros and cons. A: We trust each other. We’ve got a history of 20 years of working together. If you work together that long you have a much deeper relationship than the superficial stuff that you have to interact with in a corporate setting where you’ve just met somebody and you have to figure all that stuff out. That takes a long time to know the nuance of personalities.

AustinUP, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed AustinUP is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was formed as a result of the Mayor’s Task Force on Aging – based on the fact that the Austin area has one of the nation’s fastest-growing populations of older adults. Our motto: “Aging. Everyone’s Doing It!”

AustinUP is working to:

1. Expand Austin’s role in the “longevity marketplace” by promoting businesses, entrepreneurs and technology innovators working in the aging space

2. Change perceptions and enlighten the community about the value of our senior population, e.g., the benefits of multigenerational workplaces

3. Promote and help facilitate academic research to study aging processes and outcomes

4. Spotlight age-friendly businesses as our city implements the Age-friendly Austin Action Plan

5. Enhance livability for seniors, using the Eight Domains of Livability as a roadmap

AustinUP is currently planning their annual Aging & Innovation Summit, which will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2019.
