In their sixties, people often hold balances in the low to mid six figures in taxable brokerage accounts, with averages around five point four million dollars and medians around five hundred thirty-five thousand dollars. Retirement accounts like four-oh-one-ks and IRAs show average balances of around two hundred seventy-one thousand dollars for those aged fifty-five to sixty-four, dropping slightly to just under three hundred thousand dollars for those sixty-five and older. However, the median is much lower, around ninety-five thousand dollars for both groups. Sixty-four percent of four-oh-one-k assets for those fifty-five to sixty-four are in stocks, but this percentage drops to fifty percent for those sixty-five and over.
