Publisher's Summary:
"Beasts, Men and Gods" (1922) is a historical memoir by Ferdinand Ossendowski.

Excerpt from the Introduction:
Dr. Albert Shaw of the "Review of Reviews", after reading the manuscript, characterized the author as "The Robinson Crusoe of the Twentieth Century". I desire, therefore, to assure the reader at the outset that Dr. Ossendowski is a man of long and diverse experience as a scientist and writer with a training for careful observation which should put the stamp of accuracy and reliability on his chronicle. Only the extraordinary events of these extraordinary times could have thrown one with so many talents back into the surroundings of the "Cave Man" and thus given to us this unusual account of personal adventure, of great human mysteries and of the political and religious motives which are energizing the "Heart of Asia." - LEWIS STANTON PALEN

Artist Bio Author:
Ferdinand Ossendowski (1876-1945) was a Polish writer, explorer, professor, and anti-Communist political activist, known for his books about Lenin and the Russian Civil War in which he participated.

Members Reviews:
A window on a little documented historical events
This book is a rip roaring tale of adventure on Russia's far eastern frontier one hundred years ago. I enjoyed the archaic language, and the detailed descriptions of the people, animals along the journey, and aspects of the then prevailing religions. Some of the authors adventures seem too wild to be true.
It is a useful companion to "The Bloody White Baron" by James Palmer, a book about Baron Ungern Sternberg, written in more recent times, and presenting quite a different perspective on events in the Trans-Baikal and Mongolia at that time.
I thoroughly recommend both books.

Amusing
A diverting read that ultimately is not believable.
A great deal of fun if the reader knows how to approach it: if read as travelogue the reader will be deeply disappointed but if read as fiction or semi-fiction then the reader will have a good time.

Plundring, The Rights of man
The Writer has given many colorful portraits to claim that human selfish behavior is the highest motive for his survival, and it is understandable concerning the fundamental law of nature. The philosophy of Plundering is also forgiven, yet the nature of man can be forceful and ruthless if such conditions to him are necessary to survive even to climb psychologically, or refuge from his present state of deep distress and misery caused by major misfortune or loss.
we pay attention what Nietzche had to say also , "first is reaching the revolt and than here comes the man who lives beyond limits of God and Evil...
The Bohemian Intelligentsia....

One of the best books ever!
As a young man I read a lot of adventure books. This one beats them all!
It is a personal story of travel and adventure of the author (who also wrote
"Lenin, god to the godless") in the far East (Siberia, Mongolia,...) trying
to escape the bolsheviks. Great descriptions of the lands and nature. Very
exiting mix of adventure and local politics during those revolutionary years.

True adventure
Fascinating read.A true survivor story.
