Ben Roberts-Smith v the media part one: reputation
Update: 2022-10-283
Description
In the defamation trial of the century, Australia’s most decorated living soldier is seeking to defend his reputation against reports in three newspapers that he says falsely accuse him of being a war criminal. His lawyers argue Ben Roberts-Smith has been unfairly targeted by envious comrades and assisted by credulous journalists. The newspapers’ lawyers say their reporting is true, and that Roberts-Smith broke the ‘moral and legal rules of military engagement’, something he denies outright. But who is Ben Roberts-Smith, and how did he earn the military’s highest honour, the Victoria Cross?

Ben Roberts-Smith is entitled to clear his name if the newspapers accusations are untrue. He did six tours, and the ADF even decorated him. The issue I have with Smith is this man is being called a hero. Can someone please help me understand what is so heroic about someone choosing to do 6 tours to basically destroy a country on the other side of the world in a conflict we here tried justifying our decision to go to war through western eyes. We invaded thinking we were culturally superior and we believed once they experience our western culture they will lay down their weapons and submit to our way of life. But in reality we were invaders of their land and way of life.We had superior firepower, military intelligence, heaps of arrogance and ignorance. Ben Roberts-Smith went because he wanted to go.He was paid very well, and he must have had a real good time if he went back 5 more times. He is no hero.
