Shirley Anita Chisholm -
Shirley Chisholm born in 1924 to immigrant parents from Barbados was the first black woman elected to
Congress. During her tenure, she help create SNAP benefits, she worked on legisation to give domestic
workers the right to minimum wage. Supoorted spending increases for education and health care. In
1972 she ran for the Highest Office, President of the United States! Her Parent's ethnicity was not
considered as a qualification for her to run.
Shirley credits her success to her Granny, who she says gave her strength, dignity, and love.
A member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Harriet Tubman Society, her father being a
a supporter of Marcus Garvey, Shirley knew exactly whose shoulders she stood.

Is an American politician and lawyer who has served as the junior United States senator from California since 2017. She is the presumptive Democratic vice presidential nominee in the 2020 election.

What is Storytelling? The oldest form of education. In West Africa, they were called Griots. They told family stories and folktales. We still use this format today within our own communities. At family gatherings women were around the table telling stories, the men were playing cards telling stories of days gone by. Our history is an oral history. And just because you can't find it in a book, doesn't mean it's not valid. It just means, you didn't come to the cookout.
