The opening four chapters of the novel set the scene: A small western Washington town, where our protagonist, elementary school teacher Paul Lucas, lives with his wife and young daughter on the edge of an old-growth forest. Lucas is riding high in chapter one but heads out into the forest after work and a freak encounter completely changes his perspective. Will it be enough to derail him from his goal to be a respectable member of his community, a good husband and dad, and the kind of teacher who can win awards?
