Boxty to be boxed-off as official Leitrim product
Description
It looks as though Boxty is about to receive official status to cement its ties to County Leitrim.
Campaigns have been running to secure Protected Geographical Inidication status for Boxty for the last decade, which would enhance and grow the popularity of the product.
Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status emphasises the relationship between a particular product and the area that it is made, where one quality of the product can be directly attributed to a specific location.
The matter was raised in the Dáil by Sligo Leitrim TD, Marian Harkin, who sought updates on the long-standing application process.
In response, Minister for Agriculture, and Donegal TD, Charlie McConalogue said he would be prioritising the matter, and that he was eager to see PGI status secured.
