Description

When Chelsea Verrette was raised in a conservative religious environment and challenges her own perception of autonomy, self-care, and self-love, she discovers a compelling central conflict between the "happily ever after" she was sold and the reality of her situation.

"I learned that I do actually, in fact, have autonomy. I never really because you were in your family, so you're a child, and then you're literally given away. So you're signed away to this man. Right. So then you're a wife, and then especially inside of this religion, you are XYZ. And so when I left all of those things, I've stepped away from my immediate family. I have left the religion that I was raised in."

Chelsea Verrette is a neuro-inclusivity expert who helps people and businesses create psychological safety. She is a divorcee who was raised in a conservative religion and experienced religious trauma in her marriage. Chelsea Verrette was raised in a conservative religion that told her the purpose of women was to be a helpmate to their husband and remain sexually pure.

At 19, Chelsea got married and had two children. After 14 years, Chelsea realized she had autonomy and left her marriage, family, religion, and career. Through self-reflection and support from a psychiatrist, Chelsea began to understand religious trauma and the power of self-care.

In her new relationship, her partner showed her unconditional love and support, no matter what she believed or how she looked. This taught Chelsea to love the human instead of their outward expressions, which she now applies to her daughter.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

  1. How Self-Care and Autonomy can be hard to understand in a conservative religion.
  2. The Impact of Cognitive Dissonance and Emotional Manipulation on Relationships.
  3. The Power of Loving People for their Core Humanness and not their Outward Expressions.
