Description

First up, a lawsuit filed by the EEOC against a Texas crane company called TNT Crane & Rigging. Employees allege the workplace was rife with racial discrimination, including managers and workers frequently using the n-word and telling racist jokes. They also claim nooses and white supremacist symbols were displayed around the facility. Just absolutely horrific behavior if true. A white employee faced retaliation for speaking up. The company denied the claims, but this case spotlights how racism still festers in some work cultures.

Shifting gears, HBO staple Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is ending after nearly 30 years. The show took an in-depth investigative approach to sports stories and earned over 35 Emmys. Segments tackled issues like head injuries, sexual assault and plane crashes affecting teams. Though the cancelation wasn't for financial reasons, it's the end of an era for the acclaimed series.

In reality TV news, VH1 fired cast member Erica Mena from Love & Hip Hop Atlanta after she hurled racist insults at co-star Spice. Mena called Spice a "monkey" multiple times during an altercation, which production had to break up. Mena's own castmates condemned the derogatory language since Spice is Jamaican. VH1 said she won't return due to the racial slurs. A sad reminder that racism persists across all levels of fame and status.

Now for a disturbing viral storyβ€”a woman shared a hospital video after a man threw a brick at her face for not giving him her number when he catcalled her. Absolutely horrific injuries. The attack apparently happened in Houston after she declined his advances. Bystanders did nothing to intervene. In the emotional video, she questioned how this violence against women could be seen as okay. It prompts a lot of sobering reflections about misogyny and our own biases. Why do some men feel entitled to lash out when rejected? How can we identify and change societal forces that engender this mindset? Difficult questions, but so important to wrestle with.

In local NC news, a Greenville councilwoman was arrested for allegedly stealing from a deceased police lieutenant's bank account. Rose Glover is accused of withdrawing money after the officer passed away in 2019. A major abuse of power if true.

Also in NC, civil rights groups are defending Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls as she sues to block an investigation of comments she made about bias in the judicial system. Earls, the only Black woman justice, said she's witnessed racism and sexism against clerks and attorneys. Advocates say officials are trying to unfairly silence her for speaking on these crucial issues. Another story showing minorities facing backlash for calling out discrimination.
