They used to tell stories about Shangri-La, a land of peace and prosperity hidden in the heights of the Himalayas. In the adventure that lies ahead, Janet Locke doesn't find the mythical city, but she does find a new, joyous existence up on the roof of the world.
It starts with phone call. An old friend wants to know if Janet wants to join her on a bicycling trip through Bhutan. Janet knows absolutely nothing about the small, central Asian country. When she looks it up on the Internet, she learns that its gross national product is happiness. Janet, frustrated with life's challenging moments, decides that this sounds delightful.
After a quick stop in Thailand, Janet is on to Bhutan. She falls in love with the charming country. As Janet ventures out into the wilderness surrounding the awe-inspiring Himalayas, she learns lessons about the many worries she carries. Like so many others, this journey will change her life.
In Janet's adventure, author Dr. Frances Rinaldi mixes several spiritual traditions, including Buddhism, Catholicism, and Algonquin and Lakota spirituality. Together, they inspire Janet to let go of her worries and be happy and free.

Spiritual Adventure
This book is beautifully written, with a lot of insight into the connections between Buddhism, Christianity and teachings of Native Americans. I have never been to that part of the world and am not a biker, but this book makes me want to go there and experience what she experienced. I said thoughtful for the mood, but also very hopeful. I couldn't put it down once I started it. She also has some beautiful pictures which added even more; I can almost believe I was there with her. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a spiritual adventure.
Oh dear.....
Not much new here; a few interesting quotes. Really poorly written, more like at a junior high level, but not enough excitement/action to keep that audience.. I expected many more connections between Buddha, Christ and Native American spirituality.
This reads like and really be listed as a children's book
I only finished this book because I hoped it would get better. It never did. As a Buddhist the Christian theme was irritating and annoying. Don't bother with the book unless you are 12 years old or younger and a born again Christian.
A Joy To Read by an excellent author
I just finished reading the book and it brought sincerity and peace to me. The young Monk, to me, represented an angel telling me things that I don't understand will soon be clear to me. The Eagle, therefore, was always there at my darkest moments and of course, Christ is number one but they all had a significant part of this beautiful story. Hats off to Dr. Rinaldi for another fine book I am looking forward to the next chapter.
A Wonderful Journey
I enjoyed reading this book very much. The quotes that open each of a chapters, taken from a variety of sources, were woven into the journey beautifully. The reader is taken on a very visual exploration of Bhutan, while observing the emotional journey of the key character in the book.
As you eavesdrop on the conversations between the central character and many of the characters she meets in her travels, you can, at times imagine yourself in her situation and possibly gain some insights into what produces suffering, in our own lives, and maybe experience your own miracle.
