CEO of Sligo Rape Crisis Centre backs calls for the introduction of new domestic violence register.
Description
The CEO of the Sligo Rape Crisis Centre, has welcomed moves to introduce a domestic violence register, which would see offenders named.
The proposed law is named after 24-year-old Jennifer Poole from Dublin, who was murdered by her ex-partner Gavin Murphy in 2021.
Under the legislation the Courts Service will publish the names and convictions online. Links to relevant domestic violence services will also be integrated in the system.
Those consulting the register have direct access to the appropriate supports for themselves or another person they are concerned about. Judges will have the discretion to release abusers’ criminal history, which will also contain details of convictions and sentences, as well as any other relevant information.
Danielle Neely is the CEO of the Sligo Rape Crisis Centre, she says the establishment of a Domestic Violence Register would be a vital asset in efforts to prevent gender based violence.
