Between August 1978 and his passing in January 1985, Dr. Thompson endured near-constant, agonizing pain. His usual weight of 180 pounds dwindled by half, and even pain-relief medications no longer offered solace. Realizing he had little time left, Dr. Thompson tirelessly dedicated himself to MEDICO, the organization he had established to provide medical assistance and hope to the world's ailing and underprivileged. During those challenging days, he couldn't help but reflect on Robert Frost's lines: "The woods are beautiful, dark, and profound, but I have commitments to fulfill and many responsibilities before I rest." When he eventually succumbed, millions worldwide were shocked and mourned the loss.
