In Fort Collins, a new tradition at Colorado State University may soon be derailed for something less disruptive.

A new tradition unveiled this past Saturday between the Rams and Northern Colorado did not prove popular with many on hand at Canvass Stadium for the game. The new game-day feature involves a train horn which sounds on third-down plays for the opposing team.

The Rams unveiled the horn during their contest Saturday afternoon against cross-county rival, Northern Colorado. The Rams avoided an upset with a four-point, 21-17, win in a dramatic game played on Ag Day.

The Rams turned the ball over four times and trailed 10-0 at halftime.

CSU rallied in the second half, but the Bears extended their lead to 17-7.

With 45 seconds remaining, CSU quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi scrambled for a 13-yard touchdown run on third-and-10 from the UNC 13-yard line, giving the Rams their first lead of the game.

CSU Coach Jay Norvell expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, calling it a “massive scare”

The horn blasts scared fans as much as the play of the Rams.

Sounds like being stuck in Fort Collins traffic downtown when the train rolled through Fort Fun back in the day.

The Bears came into Saturday’s game as nearly a 35-point underdog. They played like seasoned champions hungry for the win against CSU.

Colorado State took the lead inside the final minute on a Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi TD run and the Rams held on for the win after a controversial UNC touchdown with 8 seconds to go was overturned.

It was a brutal end for UNC, after a game winning touchdown, in the final 10 seconds, was wiped out by officials.

Canvas Stadium had a faux train horn as a third-down noisemaker when it first opened. For the 2025 season, CSU brought in a new train horn — and it blasted loud and frequently on Saturday for CSU’s home opener.

For many fans, it was both too loud and too frequent.

One Ram faithful posted on X, “In the endzone it’s blowing out our eardrums.”

Even the handle CSU Ram Nation posted, “Has @ColoradoStateAD addressed the train horn situation? It was laughably loud. It’s a great idea but need to turn volume down by 50% and the amount it’s used by 50%.”

The Rams are addressing the issue. CSU Athletics Director John Weber tweeted out, “We’re already working on it. Horn 2.0 in two weeks.”

The Wyoming Cowboys will face the Rams and the toned-down horn just before Halloween next month. Wyoming will play at CSU on October 25th in a 5:30 game.
