The first half of the Utah-Wyoming game on Saturday night came to an end with the Cowboys trailing by three points. The Cowboys defense did its job, but the offense compiled only 229 yards on the ground and in the air, inside the War, on the way to a disappointing 31-6 loss.
In the first half, the Utes were plagued by missed field goals and their first turnover of the season. The Wyoming offense could not capitalize on the miscues. UW Head Coach Jay Sawvel saw it this way, after the loss:
The Utah defense bottled up the Cowboys for most of the night. Freshman running back Samuel Harris put up a career-high 68 yards on the ground. Harris also chalked up three catches for 37 yards. Running back Terron Kellman added 45 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Chris Durr Jr. added five catches for 40 yards.
Wyoming Quarterback Kaden Anderson was 12 of 23 for 108 yards with one interception. He was sacked twice.
Utah’s Devon Dampier threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Wyoming sacked Dampier once.
Wyoming played without one of its biggest offensive weapons, John Michael Gyllenborg, through most of the game. The 6-5, 251-pound tight end was standing on the sideline early in the third quarter in street clothes with ice on his leg.
The Wyoming defense stopped a Utes team that came into week 3 averaging 53-points per game against opponents. The Pokes forced a turnover and stymied the Utes inside the 30, forcing three missed field goal attempts in the first half.
Coach Sawvel said the Utes are as good a football team as Wyoming will see all year, and his team didn’t do the things they needed to do to win the game.
Wyoming’s quarterback wore a rib protector throughout the game after last week’s injury against Northern Iowa when Anderson was forced to leave the game. Anderson said after the game that he puts the loss on himself, admitting that he missed a lot of throws.
The official attendance figure was put at 23,500.
Head Coach Sawvel credited Wyoming fans for creating a great atmosphere inside War Memorial Stadium. Sawvel said the Cowboys are working to improve.
The Cowboys hit the road next week, heading south to take on Colorado on Saturday.
Elsewhere college football, UCLA fired head coach DeShaun Foster after an 0-3 start, that included losses to Mountain West teams. So, read the opening sentence in the Sunday edition of the Los Angeles Times.
Foster, a former running back at the school with no coaching experience, was fired on Sunday after 15 games that included 5 wins.
The Bruins opened the season with a loss to Utah from the Big 12, followed by back-to-back losses to UNLV and New Mexico.
