Canada - Popyrin surprise as Pegula defends, Tsitsipas family split + Nadal to miss US Open
Description
Tennis Weekly Podcast! It’s time to talk tennis and unpack all the events from the National Bank Canadian Open (Tournoi de tennis du Canada) on the ATP and WTA Tour which saw Alexi Popyrin a surprise winner of his maiden Masters 1000 title in Montreal, upsetting Andrey Rublev in the final. Popyrin was the first Australian Masters 1000 winner since Lleyton Hewitt in 2003!
On the women’s side more surprises as unseeded Amanda Anisimova made it an all American final against defending Champion and eventual winner Jessica Pegula. Jessie Pegula has now won the title in both Montreal and Toronto a feat that not many have achieved.
Elsewhere Joel and Chris discuss Rafael Nadal skipping the US Open and will he retire at the Laver Cup in Berlin like Roger Federer as well as what is the most unbreakable record in tennis. Is it Nadal’s 14 French Open titles, Novak’s Grand Slam tally or Steffi Graf’s gold slam year.
They also talk about Stefanos Tsitispas firing his father as his coach and preview the Cincinnati Open where Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are back in action after winning Olympic medals and pick their champions ahead of the US Open getting underway!
