Cape Verde Islands: Language situation and teaching of Portuguese
Update: 2018-03-08
1
Description
Dr Jorge Pinto (University of Lisbon)
This seminar focuses on the language situation in Cape Verde. Portuguese pidgins were the first Romance pidgins to emerge and gave rise to creoles throughout the world. Since independence, the role and status of Cape Verdean Creole (Kabuverdianu) have increased, and the language is used in domains previously reserved for Portuguese, e.g., formal religious and political discourse. Portuguese is used on television and radio, as well as in education, where it is the primary language of instruction throughout all levels.
