Message: Throughout the summer, we have looked at five different “one another” commands. Commands given to the church so that its members better knew how to treat and interact with each other. We now turn to a sixth “one another” command: to carry one another’s burdens. Two thousand years ago, the average person knew exactly what it meant to carry a burden. Most people walked as their primary means of transportation. So anything needed transporting had to be personally carried. People were expected to be able to carry their own burdens. Living in Christian community compelled the early church to find meaningful ways of expressing authentic love—one being the simple task of lifting up and carrying another person’s burdens.
